It's that time again. Will you be watching the Olympics?
Will NBC loose mega millions?

Must confess I'll be watching. Yeah, it's a big corporate party, but I love watching the downhill skiing, the snowboarding, the figure skating and, well just about everything except for biathalon. I even like the curling and luge.

1. What Olympics?
They've hardly announced when the opening ceremonies begin.

Meh, this year we'll not watch.

28. You must not be watching any of the NBC network
The Olympics is all they are talking about. I guess it's because they are the ones who will be airing them.

10. Probably not
It drives me nuts the way NBC chops the event up. I can't get into it at all. It's like the TV has developed ADHD. :boring:

Also, the blatant "rah rah-ing" for Americans--even if they suck--gets to be a bit much. I know, I know, NBC is an American station, but I'd appreciate a little impartiality. I try to tune into CBC whenever possible.

It's very annoying...

14. Don't watch the CBC!!!...
or you'll miss the entire thing :)

CBC was outbid by the ignominously named Canadin Olympic Media Broadcast Consortium (CTV & TSN, owned by Bell Canada, and Rogers Media) so they aren't showing the games.

If you have access CTV out of Canada, you'll get essentially the same coverage, with different faces.

for Canada. There's nothing wrong with that. People tend to cheer on their own countries, that's part of the fun.

4. Considering the millions in training dollars that these "more equal animals" recieve
to prance around like nationalist peacocks, while their fellow countrymen starve, no thanks.

I will spend my time donating at one of our local programs, instead. I abhor the display of national wealth and waste as chemically enhanced human-lite automatons show how they can be trained to essentially chase rabbits around the track, like a greyhound.

Blech!

well steroids aren't going to do you much good in the Luge. Or the slolam (sp?) skiing or ski jump - they're just focusing and trying not to fall down and turn into one of those giant snowballs rolling down the hill.

So yeah, I'll watch some of the olympics.

11. We'll be watching...
We're a family of short track speed skaters, so we're excited to see our sport get coverage. My daughter has been counting down the days for the last 3 weeks.

Canada has hosted the Olympics twice before and remains the only nation to not win a Gold Medal at a games it hosts. That monkey will be off our backs in Vancouver.

Live webcam of the Torch Relay here: http://www.ctvolympics.ca/torch/follow-torch/index.html

Not a speck of snow can be seen as the torch runs through Vancouver's Stanley Park.

And I hate that it's delayed. And I hate that they almost exclusively show American athletes. It's the fucking Olympics, man. Show me some people from other countries, why dontcha? And I hate the humaninterestupcloseandpersonalbullshit. So-and-so's great aunt has a headache so he's skiing with a heavy heart today? I.Do.Not.Give.A.Damn.

I've loved the Olympics since 1968, but the TV coverage these days is for shite. But I'll watch. When it comes right down to it, I really can't resist watching Curling and the Luge. So I'll end up getting sucked into it for awhile at least.

27. I'm not trying to be a downer, really.
It's just no one grew up in my neighborhood going skiing or taking skating lessons. I didn't grow up in the snow and it was a big deal and an hour drive to go skiing.

The division in the winter time at our schools between the haves and the have nots was most notable by lift pass on down jackets of the haves, and the denim jackets of the nots.

Picture The Outsiders.

I did learn how to ski and snowboard in my twenties, and yes, major rush.

29. which is to be preferred?
A sport like basketball and football in which a number of the participants grew up in relative poverty but now are fabulously wealthy or olympic sports like skating, skiing, etc. where many of the participants grew up in relatively affluent surroundings but are nowhere near as lavishly compensated as professional basketball athletes.

35. I have to pick one?
How about I just go down to the city buckets and just get in a pick up game instead?

You should also know there are a lot of baseball players and basketball players and yes, football players all over the country who are professionals, but they are just getting by. Ask any guy playing triple A. Or Coast League. Or any number of leagues. For that matter, ask many of the women of the WBA.

Which do you prefer?

My point is, I know more about sports I grew up playing and I have far more of a common interest in them.

Really didn't mean to hurt any rich olympians feelings.

26. Watching online
I'm a fan of individual sports, so the Olympics are a haven for me in that regard. Team sports, I don't get much into.

I love skiing, ice skating, the whole shebang. And I love learning about people from other places and rooting for them.

Yes, it's too corporatized, too big, too much pressure on the athletes to take steroids. But, I wager we will have had more wars without them than with them. The Delphic Oracle was right.

I don't have a TV right now, so I"ll be watching online. And I hope getting a more comprehensive view than whatever NBC would choose to show us.

39. The thing I most love about the Olympic Games ( Winter or Summer)
is that for those couple of weeks, everyone is an expert on the various sports involved.

the rest of the time, no one talks about triple lutzes or the strategy of the bobsled race.

It's enjoyable to have these intense half-baked conversations and then *POOF* - all done.

It amuses me a lot to be a temporary expert on sports I don't give any thought to for years.

Will I watch? You Betcha!

54. Can't Wait! I've Been Thinking That This Will Be A Good Diversion For Me
from all the haranguing we've had of late. My wish is that NOTHING goes wrong there or that there won't be some huge controversial event that will be yet ANOTHER downer!

Since MSM is what it is, don't think we can NOT watch a certain network simply because of differences of opinion many feel with them. Thankfully my husband insisted on having DISH a long time ago because he's an avid SPORTS fan, I suppose I'll be watching through them. Haven't checked, but I'm sure there will probably be some coverage through ESPN or something!

I LOVE tennis and know the "Tenis Channel" covers all the big slams, but since I have my favorites I would wait until I knew who won so I could watch. I get so nervous and caught up and have a hard time watching the first go-round. It's a problem I have watching competitive sports. Kind of like an anxiety attack, which is actually what happens!

My husband laughs and says it spoils the whole thing. While I surmise he IS correct, I can't help it.

But the Olympics are usually fun I think I'll be watching those events that interest me.
