Authorities stop van, find marijuana plants growing inside

A 30-year-old man faces drug possession charges after authorities said they found two dozen marijuana plants growing inside his van.

Nathaniel F. Evans of Yarmouth, Maine, is charged in Jackson County Circuit Court with felony possession, manufacturing and delivery of a controlled substance.

On Wednesday, authorities found 26 marijuana plants growing under a battery-powered heat lamp inside Evans’ Ford van, said Sgt. Steve Leone.

“We sometimes find mobile meth cooking labs, but we normally don’t find a mobile marijuana growing operation,” Leone said.

3. And what is accomplished?

Two or more cops are removed from patrol for the day doing paperwork. Depending on how much resistance the defense puts up they will spend hours and hours in court. There will be considerable expense in punishing this poor guy -- and for what? For something that harms no one and the majority of Americans believe should be legal to begin with. The beneficiary in this arrest is not society. The beneficiaries are the criminal justice system employees, from the cops to the judge, the court staff and (increasingly privatized) correction personnel.

The continued persecution of marijuana is a major social problem as well as a goddam shame and Obama is a willing party to it.
