Windows security update causes 'blue screen of death' for some
Edited on Thu Feb-11-10 08:45 PM by douglas9
Source: CNET

Some Windows users reported on Thursday that they were getting the "blue screen of death" on their computers when they installed Microsoft's latest security updates released two days earlier.

Most of the people complaining on a Windows forum said they had the problem on Windows XP, but one person also reported problems on Windows 7.

Users posted a fix on the site that they said seemed to work, but that didn't necessarily quell the anger.

"Where at Microsoft do I send my invoice for hours spent fixing this BS?" one person wrote on Thursday.

There is more info here...apparently the update causing the problem is KB 977165

4. A few years ago I was having trouble with Microsoft and after getting
the runaround for about 2 weeks I got so frustrated and said to one of the customer "service" reps

"Am I going to have to call Redmond,Washington directly?"

He said,"I'm sorry, maam,I don't know who he is."

7. Blue screen of death.
Wow. Sounds like XP has a major flaw in it. I got something that locked me out of my own computer and it started with a security update.

Update up their's is my new war cry! Did not need the extra problems this week. Microsoftux is getting to be a bit of a labor cost issue for me.

9. oh and let's not forget about the Win7 notebook memory problem
which M'soft is denying. People's notebooks have dying batteries due to some more of their ineptness with the battery management part of the OS.

16. then run windows on your mac.
I use the amazing and free Sun Virtual Box. http://www.virtualbox.org/

this was if you lose your Windows OS, you don't lose your computer or web access.

17. If I'm going to run windows
Why would I run it on a machine that costs 3 times what a windoze pc costs for the same hardware?

18. 2 times as much
balanced with the time continually fixing things removing malware, viruses and updating software is a price I am willing to pay.

19. It takes me about 2 hours to install windows
drivers, apps and tweak the settings. Then I have no problems with any of mine that I run windoze on. I have 8 computers, 3 running various flavors of Linux and 5 running various flavors of windows. The main reason I run Windows is because that's what I run into on the ones I fix and I have some special apps that won't run in either Wine or Virtual Box.

99% of the problems are caused by Human 1.0 Interface.

20. ...If you think MACs cost more
then you are not looking at the total cost of ownership.

It is like comparing gas mileage on various cars and picking the one that gets the highest mpg without looking at total cost of ownership over time.

How much money do Windows users spend to keep their PCs free of viruses, etc.

How much time and money is spent to restore a hard drive that has been infected and can't be cleaned?

MACs are also much more recyclable with their aluminum & glass parts than Windows PCs are with their plastic parts.

21. Okie sure
So

How much money do Windows users spend to keep their PCs free of viruses, etc.- This user $0.00

How much time and money is spent to restore a hard drive that has been infected and can't be cleaned?- this user $0.00 and 0 labor

MACs are also much more recyclable with their aluminum & glass parts than Windows PCs are with their plastic parts.- Um that is just beyond stupid. How do you know what my PC is made of?

23. i don't spend money on security apps.
There are FREE antivirus and antimalware applications out there. I've been hit with ONE virus in the last five years and that was because I trusted a disk someone gave me. I visit a lot of high risk websites without any problems, but I'm more security conscious than most users.

I've never seen a hard drive that can't be disinfected. Sometimes it's faster to to reinstall, but they can be cleaned.

As for recyclable, what do you think the cases, motherboards, drives etc are made out of in either type.
The case is made out of either steel or aluminum, the plastic is on the front panel. The circuit boards are made of the same materials-epoxy resin and copper traces.

25. Perhaps, but a late mentor of mine said there was one reason not to call Windows a virus...
... A virus usually DOES something.

He also said that as a matter of policy, he would never leave an airborne plane voluntarily while it was still functional. He had been in the Air Force.
