John Edwards has proposed to his mistress Rielle Hunter, and is buying a luxury $3.5 million beachfront home where they can live happily ever after with their love child, The ENQUIRER has learned exclusively.

The disgraced presidential candidate popped the question at the same time he told Rielle that he'd be issuing a press statement finally confirming he fathered her daughter Frances Quinn, close sources told The ENQUIRER.

Edwards, 56, released that statement on Jan. 21, and just six days later a spokesperson for his cancer-stricken wife Elizabeth confirmed the couple had legally separated after 32 years of marriage. Sources say they expect to be officially divorced within a year, paving the way for the ex-senator to make Rielle, 45, his wife.

"John dropped the proposal bomb on Rielle shortly before he issued his statement" that he was indeed Frances' father, a close source divulged.

i never found Edwards to be the guy who is into women the way Clinton was. he never looked at them in that way and this is why many found it hard to believe he would cheat in Elizabeth. even those who never liked Edwards had a hard time believing he would do that.

I think I would believe this statement. The NE has produced a lot of drama, but from the Politico, I suspect this is closer to the truth.

That said, it's not nice to see EE and JRE in this situation.

It's clear John and Elizabeth's marriage resulted in some great highs and lows, and is now over. If there's no going back, I don't see how it benefits anyone for JE not to marry Rielle and raise their child in a family environment if that's what they both want to do.

When I got divorced, my ex started seeing someone pretty soon after that, they are married now, he may or may not have been seeing her before; I don't know. I never asked. I do know that a) our marriage was "over" long before we were separated even though others didn't know that, and b) he seems happy, he's been with her for close to 20 years now. Good for him, he may as well be happy with her. I don't feel the need to claim ownership over someone I don't want to be with.

If you look at how many people have affairs in the real world, it's clear it's not all that abnormal. We pretend to be shocked, horrified, because JE's a public figure, but many of the same people who are reacting in over the top ways are probably still fans of Clinton, of Kennedy, etc.
