To many millions of past generations, the word does not need explanation.
But perhaps there are a couple of younger generations to which the word requires explanation.
It’s the place in Germany in which trials were held after WWII to hold people responsible for some of the most grotesque crimes ever committed in human history. It was a place where people had to answer for genocide.
Every living Jew knows the word Nuremberg. And it’s one of the reasons for the cry “Never Again.”
Many of us Americans, however, seem to have made genocide a conditional term. Bosnia, Chad, the Congo, and so many other places in which genocide has occurred either didn’t have oil, or didn’t have anything else we were interested in.
But here’s something we should all be interested in. The crimes of the past eight years committed by Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld, et al.
And let me say right up front. Their crimes in no way approach those that were tried at Nuremberg. But crimes they were. Thousands, perhaps millions died as a result of the actions, desires and greed of these people.
Yet, the morality that seemed to exist at Nuremberg doesn’t seem to exist here and now. There are a countless explanations for this, but, no matter how one views it, it’s all bullshit.
If Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld and all the rest are not brought to justice for their eight year reign of terror, then the WWII allies need to apologize for having brought Germans to justice for their crimes.
Then again, perhaps a different set of moral values came into being in the past 60 years.
