Anybody who uses the word "highfalutin" in a debate has lost me
Although I'm pretty lowfalutin myself it seems like such a transparent attempt to be "just plain folks" that it makes me kind of ill. I don't want somebody from the cast of Hee Haw to be president of the US I would prefer somebody who sounds like they have a brain in their head.

7. I'm a farm hick myself
and a well-read intelligent (humble too) one. I sometimes say hickish words too, that doesn't necessarily mean I'm dumb or that I am trying to be inauthentic. And I think that applies to Edwards too. He's a smart guy, but I think he's pretty authentic. 400 dollar haircuts or not, he's come a long way in his life. I think you're right.

8. Well, Dumbya gets away with crap like
"I'monna git in'er and smoke'em out". and all number of other faux-folksy expressions.

At least Edwards is actually from the south and has a real drawl.

BUSH IS FROM CONNECTICUT, Went to ANDOVER, YALE AND HARVARD. He had almost no accent before becoming governor of Texas, at which time he began impersonating a Texan, and his impersonation has gotten quirkier and more ridiculous with every passing year.

Him and his little fake, bought in 2000 movie-set ranch.

Why is a dem on this board ragging on Edwards for something so unbelievably trivial? Leave that shit to Candy Crowley. That's her job.

39. Geeze-Louse, TahitiNut. Do you have a list of acceptable idioms?
The English language is full of idioms. I use the phrase "hifalutin" all the time--and if you ever sat in on my history class you would by God know I don't cater to the pridefully ignorant (tho in person I do pronounce it "pradfly ig-nant"--but only cause us Southern boys give our classroom lectures with a wad o' chaw between the cheek and gum).

Sorry, but some people don't talk like they're from your part of the country (or like they're on TV and therefor not from any particular part of the country). That doesn't make us ignorant. That makes us colorful and interesting. ;)

43. Maybe a better question would be whether someone you'd call "highfalutin'" ...
Edited on Thu Apr-26-07 10:53 PM by TahitiNut
... can get a copy of a rule book containing what YOU think is acceptable vocabulary.

I think perhaps you've got things a bit backward here. I'm merely making an observation about folks who'd dismiss or demean others for the language they'd use. You are then trying to criticize me for supposedly making the criticism you're making of me??? That's strange. I don't really care about the TERM used - as I do about the meaning of the term. It demeans people for speaking intelligently and using a vocabulary that some folks don't bother acquiring.

Again, it's about attacking intellect and erudition - NOT about the terms used. I don't give a rat's ass about regional dialects and slang. I've used 'em all. (But shit, man, don't let the facts get in the way of defensively self-righteous indignation, no matter how misdirected.)

18. Well, seeing as how I was right about who said it - I have to
wonder...

According to the Southern definition of "hifallutin," Edwards would qualify. That house and those $400 haircuts are the epitome of "hifallutin." Not that I care about either, but it does add to my opinion that Edwards is a bit hypocritical.

34. Why continue to perpetuate a false impression about $400 haircuts, or is that all you got?
Edited on Thu Apr-26-07 09:29 PM by Blackhatjack
To politicians time is the great nonrenewable resource.

You would have to be living in a cave not to have heard him explain that having the stylist meet him rather than Edwards going to his salon saved him time and gave him the opportunity to spend that time talkin with people and supporters.

He also explained he did not know the costs in advance, and that he was charged by the stylist according to the amount of money the stylist could have made in his salon doing other jobs rather than leaving the salon to cut Edwards hair. Sounds fair to me.

He explained that it was erroneously billed to his campaign and because of that it was properly reported with his campaign reports. He has since paid for the haircuts out of his personal funds and the campaign accounts have been credited for those amounts expended.

So now you know the true story. Are you going to continue to use this line about $400 haircuts to perpetuate the myth that Edwards charged the $400 haircut to his campaign as if he does this on a regular basis?

(BTW Clark still not announced he is running for president yet?).

26. it's a word my grandmother grew up saying too but that doesn't mean
I want a president who uses those words. My grandma was born in Alabama, spent all her adult life in Tennessee and never traveled more than 50 miles from home, never drove, did not have a TV, got through the 5th grade in school and read only the Bible. I loved her more than almost any human being I've ever known but I wouldn't want her to hold high political office.

37. You need to get your facts straight on both accounts... and fix your phoney meter at the same time!
Edwards does not own a 28,000 sq ft house, and the county tax records back that up.

The $400 haircut has been used to perpetuate a myth about Edwards. See my reply above in this thread. He explained what happened.

Edwards is the most genuine candidate in the field. Your phoney meter is just phoney.

AND regarding his 'haircut' he explained it was mistakenly charged to the campaign and properly reported on his campaign finance reports because it was charged there. He reimbursed the campaign out of his personal funds for the total costs.

The amount was calculated by the hair stylist as to what other jobs he could have done if he had not left his salon to cut Edwards' hair, and Edwards has no idea of the cost in advance. It was arranged to save Edwards the time he would have had to expend going out to have his hair cut in a salon. Time is the nonrenewable resource political candidates do not have enough of.

So now you know the true story. Are you going to continue to perpetuate the false impression regarding the size of the Edwards home and his $400 haircut?
