White House warm to televised exchange with Senate GOP
By Michael O'Brien - 02/01/10 06:43 PM ET

President Barack Obama would like an opportunity for a televised exchange with Senate Republicans, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Monday.

Gibbs said that the administration would welcome an invitation for a televised exchange with the Senate GOP, similar to the extraordinary question-and-answer sessions with members of the House Republican Conference at their retreat last week.

"I believe we have been invited to speak to the Senate Republicans, and we will do so," Gibbs said during his daily press briefing.

The televised session won plaudits from members of the media and other political observers for its openness.

"I think the President enjoyed the give and take on these issues of importance. You guys seemed to think it was a worthwhile endeavor," Gibbs told reporters. "And I think opportunities like this for both sides are important to talk through our ideas.":

Gibbs said the White House "wouldn't have any problem" with an exchange with Senate Republicans being open to TV cameras, too.

3. Theoretically, he already did.
Being as the Green Party has no elected officials in US Congress, he's already met with their entire delegation.

8. yes but
meeting with leaders of other parties is useful. They do not have to be elected officials. We need a coalition of ideas not 2 horse system.

19. When they represent Americans as elected officials
perhaps? There are several political parties in the US. I don't think the President has time to entertain them all.

18. How very freep of you
That's a typical right-wing meme--and it's a pretty tired one at that. Yeah, never mind that the man knows what he's talking about; you'd rather have a smooth talker that says nothing of substance? :eyes:

"the White House wouldn't havy any problems with exchange with Senate republicans being open to cameras"

In other words, "C'mon chicken boys, you're not afraid of these little ol' cameras are you?"

7. How about a televised exchange between Obama and single payer experts?
Now that would be interesting and might actually get this country somewhere.

12. I'm not necessarily as keen on this idea...they'll be prepared next time.
Face it, no GOPper expected the smack-down they received Friday. Now that they know how Obama plays, they'll refine their game. The questions will be different, the tone will be different. They've already had time to work out different strategies to trip him up.

You can bet your last dime that a "think tank" of the old GOP stalwarts is sitting in a smokey room someplace -- likely with hookers and teenage boy escorts -- dreaming up ways to stick it to the uppity black man next time. I'm actually surprised at the number of people who've said they think Obama should do lots of these meetings. If we've learned anything it's that the GOP are evil, conniving scum and that they'll do anything to make their case. I see no reason to expect the next televised debate to go as well for Obama as the first one.

23. They don't need to "whup" anyone- just rehabilitate their image and advance their narrative
They'll go from the party of no- responsible for the economic crash (and more) to the party fighting for alternative ideas that we should work with (and vote for).
