How Warped & Extremist We've Become
Edited on Sun Jan-31-10 09:56 PM by kpete
How much clearer evidence can there be of how warped and extremist weve become on these matters? The express policies of the right-wing Ronald Reagan applying the rule of law to terrorists; delegitimizing Terrorists by treating them as criminals; and compelling the criminal prosecution of those who authorize torture are now considered on the Leftist fringe. Merely advocating what Reagan explicitly adopted as his policy to use democracys most potent tool, the rule of law against Terrorists is now the exclusive province of civil liberties extremists. In those rare cases when Obama does what Reagans policy demanded in all instances and what even Bush did at times namely, trials and due process for accused Terrorists he is attacked as being Soft on Terror by Democrats and Republicans alike. And the mere notion that we should prosecute torturers (as Reagan bound the U.S. to do) or even hold them accountable in ways short of criminal proceedings is now the hallmark of a Far Leftist Purist. Thats how far weve fallen, how extremist our political consensus has become.

1. You make excellent point!
And where I live, being a "liberal" is considered a ridiculous, low class thing to be!
In fact, I am being ostracized every day because I am "weird" and support President Obama!

10. Thanks!
And, yes, that's what I do! I find MY community on the web, and just socialize with neighbors in a "don't ask, don't tell," fashion. . .unless I am asked directly about an opinion, or I hear some outrageous claim that is repeated from of Fox News or Rush Limbaugh's mouth!!! Then I make my point that I don't agree with . . .whatever!

Still, it can be a little lonely at times! But I make a point of being very helpful and friendly with everyone. . .until they approach politics or religion...

8. The problem with that line of thinking is that it leads to
I'm not going to fight for the rights of liberals. Who cares if the government rounds them up.
Oh, and I think you mean "accused terrorists rights". Keep in mind that not all these people are terrorists. Some aren't even accused of being terrorists or enemy combatants. They were just in the wrong place at the wrong time during the Bush administration.

First they came for and all that noise.

12. Ronald Reagan -- Leftist? He prosecuted terrorists as criminals, and
http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/20...

he also signed the UN treaty against torture: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1079/is_n2137_v8... /

he also prosecuted a Texas sheriff who waterboarded: http://www.truthout.org/042709J

This is not to disagree with you about Reagan.

This is to illustrate the thesis of this post: We have become so far-right that REAGAN is now a Leftist.
