Hugh Hewitt echoes Hugo Chavez: Obama is ‘invading Haiti.’
Yesterday in an interview with writer Christopher Hitchens, conservative pundit Hugh Hewitt argued that President Obama had “invaded Haiti” in the aftermath of last week’s earthquake, in a way that was less legal than what President Bush did in Iraq:

HH: We’ve invaded Haiti. We dropped troops on the presidential palace yesterday. The difference between Bush invading Iraq, and Obama invading Haiti, is that Bush had Congressional authorization. I’m glad that President Obama has done this, but don’t you find it odd that the left is all quiet as to this extraordinary exercise in presidential prerogative unguided by, unauthorized by simply unilateral on the part of the President?

CH: Yes, not seeking any international body, and as far as we know, though it’s very hard to be sure, no permission, not that I think their constitution would allow them permission, from a Haitian government, either.

HH: That’s right. I mean, we just took over.

9. never heard of him either, but apparently he's a piece of shit
He returned to California in 1989 to oversee construction of the Richard M. Nixon Library as the library's executive director from groundbreaking through dedication and opening. In 1990, Hewitt sparked controversy by proposing screening of researchers wishing to use the library resources. Hewitt suggested refusing admission to researchers deemed "unfriendly" — specifically Bob Woodward, whom he said was "not a responsible journalist." John Taylor, a spokesman for Nixon, overturned Hewitt's decision after two days, but it became the subject of editorial rebuke in The New York Times anyway.<3> <...>

Hewitt has been criticized by Andrew Sullivan, who calls him a "Christianist."<4> When Sullivan appeared on Hewitt's radio show to promote his book The Conservative Soul, a lively exchange ensued and Hewitt criticized Sullivan's book as intellectually messy.<5> Sullivan now gives out a Hewitt Award for over-the-top right-wing rhetoric.

4. Chavez's worries that the US could use the crisis to seize control in
Haiti is not withhout historical foundation - we have, in fact, invaded Haiti how many times in the past century? Four, is it?

OTOH, Hewitt saying we actually ARE doing it, and that the troops helping with the relief effort is the same, or worse, than attacking, destroying and overthrowing the government of Iraq is just nuts.

6. Chavez says we are doing it, too.
I'm sure everyone will be happy if we just pull out and wait to go in with a multinational UN force, right?

16. There is already a multinational UN force there
although State would like to overlook that.

And hey, looky here, the director of Partners in Health also says this looks more like an occupation than a relief effort. He must be on the Venezuelan payroll, too! :sarcasm:

32. How's this? He is the democratically elected president of another country
and I don't really see why he's much concern to us. I do not like the tendency we've had to take out elected leaders in South and Central America while we install right wing dictators. Oh, but then there's all that oil in Venezuela.

Consider this: "don’t you find it odd that the left is all quiet as to this extraordinary exercise in presidential prerogative unguided by, unauthorized by simply unilateral on the part of the President?"

The left is not at all quiet about those things. They left is making a big stink about it. There are a lot of people making a stink about it.

Edit: furthermore, Chavez is "the left" and he is making a big stink about it. Hewitt cannot even keep his own argument straight.

I'm not comfortable with such a large US military presence in Haiti.
That said Hewitt was chatting bullshit. The necessary protocols were signed with Haiti, the United Nations and the United States. I follow those things carefully.
