Bush: US Gen May Know By Sept If Iraq Surge Is Working - TV

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- U.S. Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, may know by September whether the recent troop surge there is working, U.S. President George W. Bush said in a television interview broadcast Tuesday.

"I think (Petraeus) would tell you in September he might have a pretty good feel for whether or not it made sense," Bush said in a transcript of interview on PBS's Charlie Rose Show.

Asked by Rose if there was a "plan B", Bush replied: "Plan B is to make plan A work, and that is what we are talking to David (Petraeus) about."

"The problem is you start talking about plan B - that is where everyone defaults - and my attitude is this is the best plan we could come up with," Bush said in the interview.

When pressed further by Rose, Bush said: "We are constantly planning and constantly adjusting and constantly making changes. That is what happened here."

What's 'happening' here is Bush has no alternate plan if this one continues to fail other than to continue escalating and dig our troops in even further. Bush's statement that "plan 'B' is to make plan 'A' work" is clear proof that if, in September, his occupation has worsened, his only intention is to continue to push our troops forward.
