Was originally something that meant, in essence, "not the way we do things" or "against our custom." In some cultures, people eat dogs, but we don't do that in the United States. Eating dogs would be an "abomination" in the United States. Some cultures greatly revere the cow, but we slaughter them by the millions for steaks and burgers. Eating beef is an "abomination" in those other cultures. Does that make our customs and mores right? Or does it make other nations' customs right? Of course not. It's simply different ways of living, and while we might take some issue with how other cultures conduct themselves, to pronounce one as divinely ordained and the other damned is to play a fool's game.

It's also important to understand the context of the story that's being told in Leviticus, but that's probably best dealt with in another post.
