That's what I always put when I'm asked on a form or something or other. And I encourage everyone I know to do the same. And I do believe one day it won't mean anything more than your hair or eye color.

Race is a laughable concept that I don't indulge in, even as a societal construct. Unfortunately, the mainstream media drinks it in and helps keep the concept of race alive and well. It's just another marketing strategy to them.

I once put down Hispanic Eskimo with Jedi for religious preference. It was still there several years later. I mess with the race stats every chance I get. They are counter productive at so many levels and the more bogus they get, the less meaning they will have.

We have two daughters. One took after her African ancestors, the other one you would never think has any African in her. One at school was declared not black enough to call herself black or even mixed race, the other was verbally attacked for not sounding black though she appeared to be heavily African. We had a sit down with the guidance office about that and the limitations of their input on the matter. None of us use ever use the term African-American since we are not.

No, you're no less of an American if you say you're a <blankfill>-hyphen-American. If American comes behind the hyphen, that's good enough for me. Being willing to segment your nationality like that is just an artifact of America's cultural peculiarities. We are, after all, "one made of many." God bless America!

But for me, personally, I won't allow someone else to dump the pre-hyphenate "European" on me because it's just not true. I'm not of European extraction in any way that I'm not of Asian or African extraction. Without a doubt I've had genetic ancestors born on all of those continents. So what? My cultural identity is rooted in American experiences and American geography and peculiarly American values and world views. That's me. But in my view, if you live here and identify here, you're American and I have no right to carve up your identity or hyphenate your Americanism. We're all the hungry wretched burning to be free.
