90. Obama has been far more open than the previous administration.
While I would like 100% perfection, I will cut Obama some slack because overturning Washington in a year is not possible.

He has

a) started declassification of documents
b) opened up WH visitor logs
c) posted bills on the internet
d) televised a large number of the health care debates

If you would like to condemn him on less than 100% rating, then fine, settle for 0% like the last admin.
I would settle for B+ and hope that at the end of his four year term he can get to A-.

I know he and Pelosi and Reid and others are working really hard, against obstacles not of their own making.

And no one appreciates that.

An email list + the same old bullshit = the new era of political dominance?

I just think it's funny that that Plouffe guy is running around bragging on this email list, like it changes the whole game. As a few articles have mentioned, these "net savvy" operatives seem to have envisioned a new form of top-down communication. Doesn't work like that.

13. Let the Sun Shine In: Barack Obama’s Broken Promise on Open Government
http://seminal.firedoglake.com/diary/22495

"...Recall that shortly after Obama made those promises, he met in secret, behind closed doors with the representatives of major insurance companies to discuss health care reform. His administration denied this until the New York Times broke the story and gave the details of the meetings. Shortly after those secret meetings, President Obama gave up completely on any public option (it’s " a sliver", which was really an understatement of how little he thought of it) and began talking about "insurance reform" not "public health reform". His talk to both houses of Congress in September introduced a mandated system of insurance which Dennis Kucinich rightly called "the wrong approach, a sell-out to the insurance companies."

So now the same man who campaigned and won an election largely on the promise that he would do things differently in Washington is doing the same old things the same old ways: in secret, in smoke-filled rooms, behind closed doors.

But as another diarist here put it, some called Obama’s bluff. Powwow has a good diary up called "Let the C-SPAN cameras in, Democrats. That’s a very worthwhile read but Powwow discusses some things I don’t (especially filibusters) and vice versa. I think the blame for this broken campaign promise should be laid at the foot of the man who made it to the American people: Barack Obama. He’s also the guy who nixed the public option, who took single payer single-handedly off the table, and who, in Sen. Russ Feingold’s assessment, got exactly the insurance based bill that he originally wanted.

Now the final details of that bill, perhaps the most important piece of domestic legislation since the 1960’s, will be hammered out in secret, behind closed doors at the behest of the leader of the Democratic party..."

80. My read is that RE lied to the President about how many Senate votes the weak version PO had.
Since Harry Reid was about to bring that version to a vote, and was under pressure to make sure a HCR bill passed, you can be pretty sure he'd counted to 60, even if he had to put the screws on Lieberman. So what appears to have happened was that Lieberman complained to RE; RE claimed to the President that there weren't 60; the President told Reid to give Lieberman what he wanted including elimination of the public option.

I wouldn't put it past RE to manipulate the President to do what RE thinks is needed to guarantee corralling all corporate money for the Dem Party. And it's worked, going by all the articles claiming the R party is broke. Of course aligning Dem policies to corporate demands this way is good only if you think an opposition to a program potentially fatal to our form of gov't and the livibility of the planet is optional.

He's also the one who financed and promoted the highly edited ACORN tapes, worked at Drudge for quite some time, called Ted Kennedy some particularly vile things immediately after his death...

There are a whole host of reasons his crap shouldn't be posted here directing traffic and revenue to his pockets. He plans on going after Jerry Brown in his continueing pursuit of ACORN.

Find some better sources people! Search youtube yourself, or better yet, post the UNedited version, and let everyone reach their own conclusions.

- That support peace over war

- That will re-regulate wall street into submission

- That will coral corporate greed by eliminating corporate person hood

- That will deliver on single-payer health care reform

and

- That will support and pass public campaign financing

If those candidates be Greens, Progressives, Independents, Republicans, Democrats, or other - Then so be it!

Despite the label that falls behind the candidates name.

Just because the candidate has a label of D or R does not necessarily mean, any longer, that said candidate actually espouses Democratic and Progressive principles.

With this administration, we have clear evidence via observed actions that their bias is toward corporations and the corporatist agenda.

I will vote for Democratic and Progressive principles that benefit people over corporations to my dying days.

I've watched hours and hours of hearings, of course SP advocates were mostly excluded, but have not seen the negotiations on the 80 billion dollar deal.

What exactly was the deal, where is the promise to have Medicare as a whole negotiate for lower drug prices?

Obama even ran an ad talking about this issue, then he met with Billy and made a deal.

51. It reminds me very much of how toddlers are obsessed with the
demarcation between "baby" and "big boy". Perhaps it is an underlying sense of insecurity that makes the toddler, who is, from an adult perspective, much closer to being a "baby" than being a "big" anything that compels him to insist that he is a "big boy".

But to everyone else, highlighting this minor difference in age has precisely the opposite of the intended effect. That is to say, it reminds everyone precisely how immature the toddler really is!

Do you see any parallels to this common, real life behavior played out in this thread?

84. I've looked for a video of the negotiations with Billy Tauzin and the 80 billion ...
dollar deal and have asked several people on this thread, still not one person can post a video of those negotiations.

If you read through the Obama/Biden HC plan it states that they will repeal the ban on Medicare negotiating drug prices and state that we could save up to 30 billion a year. They cite a study that actually talks about saving a little more.

As the boomers retire this is a Big issue going forward for Medicare and big profits for the drug companies.

So I ask again, can you or someone else post the video of the negotiations that led to the 80 billion dollar deal instead of the 300 billion mentioned in the Obama/Biden plan.

83. Rec despite the source. The tapes are REAL, and the promise has been broken.
That can't be denied.

86. And this is why the republican party, who I regard with
high disdain and who I believe stands in the way of true progress in all aspects of human concern for this planet.....this is why they will continue to be a force that we as liberals will not be able to overcome until we can come together as a group and stand against what we are really fighting against. Republicans, as much as I despise their agenda, stand together with their politicians, no matter how low they sink, ie.....Sanford and Ensign, just to name a couple, yet we can't muster up support for one of the best presidents this country has had in the last half a century. We will never be able to get our hopes of equality for all, health care for all, nothing that is important to us, until we realize that picking apart our president, who may not stand for everything we want, but for doggone most of what we want........picking him apart does absolutely nothing towards realizing our goals for this country. The repubs must have a good laugh when they visit this site now. They must think they are conquering us from within. Because of the sentiments displayed on DU regularly now, we might well find ourselves with a fight in 2012 and with another stinking repub leader of the free world. If that suits you, and you give up the fight now, then I guess that's what we'll deserve.

108. If he would just do what the fuck he said he was going to do there would be no controversy here..
This is a new era, people can fact check politicians with a few clicks of a mouse, no amount of bafflegab will cover up the fact that Obama said one thing and is now doing another.

95. I've got to hand it to the rightwing noise machine
They're doing more to drive a wedge between the left wing of the party and Obama than they ever attempted to do under Clinton.

They learned precisely how to impeach a Democrat, and then convict that Democrat in the Senate.
