Poll question: Fair Trade candidate vs Free Trade(Pro-NAFTA) .. who gets your vote?
Edited on Thu Dec-31-09 06:32 PM by Union Yes
If you HAD to judge which candidate to vote for based solely on their stance regarding protecting our current "Free" Trade laws or reforming them for a much fairer system and bringing our jobs back home, which would you choose.

6. What does "fair trade" mean?
I support certain "fair trade" measures--e.g., I would get rid of US agricultural subsidies and the tariffs protecting US agriculture, an old demand of many fair trade advocates, but that's part of the theory of free trade too, though not the practice. I would let developing countries have more autonomy in trade deals so that they could pursue more active industrial policies to promote their economic growth. I would try to incorporate a framework of environmental protections into trade deals, though ideally this would be done globally, not bilaterally. Depending on how likely it would be to constitute an effective incentive, I would seriously consider tying trade deals to improvement in human rights--and human rights includes a basic framework of workers rights too.

But I would not seek to protect US industries from foreign competition, and I would not approach the task of regulating trade with the intent of pricing foreign workers out of the market to "protect US jobs" (which is a misleading slogan anyway).

10. I would imagine it would look something like British mercantilism, except with predator drones
To say the US market is slammed shut to foreign imports and we bomb countries that don't open their doors to US goods and investment.
