What is Community-based Harassment and/or "Cause Stalking"?
What is Community-based Harassment?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Community-based harassment is a grown-up version of school yard bullying.

Multiple individuals within a community participate in the harassment and stalking of a single individual. However, rather than attack a victim physically, techniques are used to undermine a person psychologically. This can be far more damaging than a physical attack because not only is it very hard to prove, but it is extremely traumatizing for the victim. (Also known as cause stalking or gang stalking).

Who is behind the stalking groups?

Corporations:

Groups are used by corporations use to stalk their enemies or potential enemies. (19)

Organized crime:

Many groups have links to convicted criminals, and associations with organized crime. (24)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Who is considered a threat to a corporation or industry?

Whistleblowers

Activists

What sets community-based harassment apart from the related examples to the right is that the reason it takes place is often obscure to the victim. Without a solid reason for its occurrence, victims are often dismissed as delusional.

In addition, this form of harassment often leaves the target a victim of ridicule among friends and family because of the subtle nature of the attacks, which further compounds the trauma to the victim. It is emotionally draining and isolating to the victims because it is extremely difficult to prove, and virtually impossible to prosecute.

1. thought this was referring to my hobby
I like to find random people on the internet, or off, and create 'community'/social networking type sites dedicated solely to them. People come on and create blog postings about this random person and have discussions about them... It's really creepy, but kind of funny in a creepy sort of way.

2. Terrific resource--how did you find this?

I need to reread and think about it more, but this has many more applications than just corporations and organized crime (read--politics, hehehe)

Gaslighting on a wide scale.

Goddess, this is such a sick society!!

Thanks so much for this piece... much to ponder here.

3. Thanks Bobbolink.
I was searching around and came across it.

What I also found interesting is how its origins largely stem from methods used by the KKK.

No doubt gaslighting on a wide scale.

Thanks for posting.

4. What this reminds me of
Is a friend who had attended a religious group for young adults for a short while after she had relocated to a new area, but had left because they were condemning her for *gasp* being friends with a gay man *gasp*. After she had told them to stuff it, the group would show up at her apartment, repeatedly, to "check up on her" because they were "concerned" about her well-being. For weeks this went on, until, I believe, she told them that she'd call the police the next time they showed up for an intervention.

5. Apparently a number of the perpetrators are recruited from some churches.
