Los Angeles teachers' union sues school district over charter plans.
I guess the battles continue as the charter schools organize to move in.

Union sues LA school district over charter plan

LOS ANGELES—A teachers union has sued the Los Angeles Unified School District over a plan to allow a new campus to be run as a charter school.

The lawsuit was filed Monday by United Teachers Los Angeles on behalf of a group of instructors at the chronically overcrowded Garfield High School.

The suit says the district violated state law by not allowing teachers to vote on whether a school built to relieve overcrowding at Garfield should be a charter.

The new Esteban Torres High School in east Los Angeles is among 24 new schools set to open in September that school officials have proposed handing to charter operators.

Los Angeles has been one of the largest battlegrounds between public and charter schools.

The corporate charter school movement is getting ready to rear it's ugliest face as LAUSD prepares to action off 250 schools (with part of this process headed by former Broad Resident Parker Hudnut). Media outlets in LA have frozen out the voice of teachers, painted union members as totally crazy, and refused to take any kind of critical look at this rapid expansion of charter schools despite a growing body of evidence that should give us reason to pause.

Here is how a lot of it has been accomplished. They call them grassroots parent groups, but in reality they are formed and funded by charter school corporations.

One place to start looking at the tremendous growth of these seemingly grass-root groups of parents is in the city of Los Angeles where not only 250 schools have been given the bums rush out of the corridors of public management, but they are due to be thrown into the laps of non-profit outfits like Green Dot Public Schools or Alliance Public Schools, to name just a few. It is truly astounding, for in the case of the non-profit school systems that are emerging, these non-profit EMO’s are bent on creating a new, national retail chain of charter schools with outlets in as many states and school districts they can possibly get their hands on and their tactics are not unlike the ‘grass-root’ town hall health care meetings.

..."Green Dot formed the Los Angeles Parents Union (lapu), a citywide grassroots organization of parents that pushes educators, administrators, and public officials to improve their schools (Green Dot Public Schools & Los Angeles Parents Union, 2008

Like the Tea Parties, these are not grassroots groups which arose spontaneously to suit a need.

Green Dot formed the Los Angeles Parents Union (lapu), a citywide grassroots organization of parents that pushes educators, administrators, and public officials to improve their schools (Green Dot Public Schools & Los Angeles Parents Union, 2008.

..."lapu developed an innovative program called “ Parent University ” in which parents gain skills to communicate with teachers and administrators to advocate for their children and use organizing tools such as primers on graduation requirements and school-quality scores, among other supports. The effectiveness of Parent University and the sheer number of parents attending serve as examples of the changing face of human capital in Los Angeles education reform, as parents gain both expertise and a voice to push for positive changes for their children and their communities (ibid).

Green Dot’s organizing efforts make them now poised to seize some of the 250 charter schools that LA has released from public governance. Why did Barr start Parents Union? Simple: to organize parents and teachers so they would rebel against their under-serving public schools and throw their lot in with Green Dot.

It's amazing how quickly this is being done now under Arne's tutelage.

If we had a real Democratic administration in the white house I would expect the DoJ to be filing friend of the court briefs helping the union, and helping the public school districts survive. But I don't see that happening.

Instead, don't be surprised in the current administration comes in helping the corporations. :(

Yes, and it is horrible that Obama is supporting Charter Schools. Here in NYC he is a big public fan of Bloomberg and Klein in their efforts to shove charter schools down our throats. :(

It is a huge problem that Obama is anti-union, and he supports gutting public education. He openly wants to privatizing education. Where the fuck would our country be without public education? How can anyone think that privatizing education is a good thing? x(

If he had made this known during this campaign then teachers unions definitely would not have supported him. Unions as a whole probably would not have supported him. They would almost certainly have all supported Clinton or other candidates.

This is another whole HUGE area in which Obama lied to everyone prior to the election in order to get votes, and pulled a big bait and switch. :grr:

11. Once charter schools are in place in a city like L.A.
the public schools can be defunded. Then it is quite easy to demand less and less in terms of the qualifications of teachers, the sizes of classrooms and the overall equality in education. Wealthy parents will pay extra and get great charter schools. Poor areas will get cheap charter schools. More and more "teaching" will be actually just computerized rote learning, robot learning so to speak.

Sad. But parents are stupid enough to fall for this. It is a real shame.
