Defeat inevitable, GOP gives in on timing of health care vote

By David Lightman | McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON — The final Senate vote on health care will begin at 8 a.m. Thursday.

The bill is expected to win approval, but Republicans were threatening to continue debate until early evening Christmas Eve. But some in the GOP were wary, fearing they would not be able to get home in time for the holidays.

"The American people are entitled to review the content. They're still interested in what the details are," said Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

But McConnell agreed to the earlier vote. Since a series of procedural votes this week has consistently garnerned 60 votes--58 Democrats and two independents--the bill is expected to pass. None of the 40 Republicans has voted with the majority.

5. They view the bill as a success.
There are 40 repukes plus 5 to 10 corporatist Dems. They could stop this bill if they wanted. Hmmm, maybe they dont want.

they're heartless

In exchange for an earlier departure time, Democrats agreed to allow the Republicans to offer up to four amendments to the debt limit legislation when it comes up for a longer-term extension in February.

He won't do it because he's far classier than me, but wouldn't it be delicious to watch Sen. Franken gum up the works just a little bit to keep his Republican colleagues from getting home in time for Christmas?
