2. They were not the republicans and Obama did a great job in his campaign

He mobilized and energized a lot of voters. Also, some republicans stayed home which also helped.

5. Obama energized the Democratic base which turned out in

larger numbers. The Republican base wasn't excited about McCain and that depressed Republican turnout. Democrats fielded moderate-conservative candidates in red-purple districts and took some traditional Republican seats. Democrats put together a better ground game and raised enough money to do a good job of late, target advertising. Many, many factors alligned to Democrats advantage.

Americans were already feeling frightened from the pinch of economic collapse and Democrats successfully pleased the blame on Bush while Republicans reacted to the collapse of their economic ideology by raising the specter of Socialism.

Because we are a two party system and Democrats are the only viable alternative, they reaped the benefit.
