Colbert/Penn Meta-Free-Phor-All - A juicy, juicy treat for language lovers
Moderated by a former US Poet Laureate, here's the smart and wickedly brutal funny that was missing from last night's press suck-up.

The premise? Faux News-highlighted remarks Penn made that referenced pundits who "bathe in the moisture of (bush's) soiled and blood-soaked underwear".

It's Word War I. And clocks were cleaned..... :patriot:

That should be his Emmy submission.

19. funny how concern about potential divisiveness
Edited on Sun Apr-22-07 12:59 PM by hlthe2b
would lead said poster to do a separate thread poll on church attendence among liberal/progressive DUers-- on Sunday morning when those who might respond affirmatively, would likely be in church?!

Just saying, I am not sure potential "divisiveness" is the issue of concern...

too late here too, but I would imagine someone got a little too excited (i.e., pissed) about ThomWV's assertion that the Colbert-Penn segment was "childish shit by a pair of idiots" (and I suppose, by extension, so too the DUers who thoroughly enjoyed the segment)..:eyes:

26. First,...
...the level of national discourse doesn't get "rise"-d, it gets raised. Second, satire is a wonderful tool for bringing down the mighty; when people laugh at the powerful, it's harder to fear them or otherwise take them seriously. Third, those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones about "idiots" like: 1) Colbert, with a widely followed and well compensated position commenting satirically upon our current sorry political state, or 2) Sean Penn, probably the best actor of his generation -- who has never shown the slightest fear about risking his highly lucrative career with his strident (not to mention well-informed and articulate) progressive advocacy and his on-the-ground volunteerist spirit.

Jealous in WV, anyone?

28. I here below de-construct your post:
"Childish" - are you kidding me? Robert Pinske is as as childish as a heart attack! (METAPHOR!!!)
"Shit" - like on George Bush's soiled and blood-soaked underwear?
"On a comedy channel" - With the most well-informed newswatchers in the country.
"By a pair of idiots" - Sean Penn. Steven Colbert.
"And this is supposed to rise the level of national discourse?" - "It rises like the plume of odor emanating from my pants as I fart in your general direction on a cold and lonely afternoon."

Read much? Ever?

Edit to add: Just realized, that you posted the church survey/flamebait/popquiz/none of your bees wax--poll earlier.

So this Penn vs Colbert thing was pretty much a 747 parting your hair?

Huh. Figures.

He managed to keep a straight face through almost the whole "game" and only slipped once toward the end.

14. I once brushed his arm in a hotel check-in line.
It was the national convention of the NCTE (English teacher group), and he was the keynote as the Poet Laureate. He was an amazing speaker, and he really helped me stay with teaching for another year. He rocks!!

6. That whole thing was outstanding
down to Pinsky illuminating metaphors with Colbert & Penn staying in character. Penn's pristine suit was fab, then the blood-soaked GWB monogrammed underwear came out. The metaphors were brilliant. The 10,000,000 points was a direct hit on game shows.

:applause:

I *heart* smart people's TV!

And I wondered what you and the rest thought about some Democrats saying that members of Congress should not do Colbert's mock interviews, anymore.

9. I understand the concern but I think it should be an individual decision
-and I'd much rather leadership council against doing Faux interviews than comedy spots. The mock interviews don't seem as risky as they used to, either. Have any of them produced anything *really* embarassing? The worst I remember was the dem who repeated after Stephen something about drugs being fun -and that was just funny.

10. You hit it exactly, Rose.
When that veto of Colbert was suggested, the climate was definitely different. It just goes to show that Colbert has always been a leader in cutting edge political comedy. I miss seeing the "Better Know a District" pieces. They were so far over the top, I don't see how anyone could take them seriously.

25. I hope Colbert does more of these!
Nothing reaches the younger people more than humor & it would be great to see this as a regular segment about the latest events. I can imagine it being at least a weekly segment about the news of the week.

Excellent!
