Charles Gibson has retired from ABC News...his legacy?
Charles Gibson's last day as ABC World News anchor was today. It began with an exclusive Brian Ross piece on a military strike on Al-Qaeda in Yemen. In an odd juxtaposition, a story on the east coast snowstorm (with Sam Champion) preceded the report on the day at the http://abcnews.go.com/WN/Politics/tentative-deal-climate-change-negotiations-copenhagen/story?id=9373562">Climate Change Summit. Update on Senate action on health care. Commercial. A piece on businesses accommodating children with autism. Then a preview of tonight's Nightline, where Jeffrey Kofman will interview David Goldman, who's struggling to gain custody of his son currently living in Brazil with stepfather. Commercial.

And then the grand finale, Gibson delivers his farewell speech and can be seen nearly breaking down as he signs off for the last time before the program transitions to a video collection of farewells from various celebrities. They range from the currently living former presidents (Clinton, the Bushes, and Carter), other ABC News reporters, cooks Emeril Lagasse and Wolfgang Puck, the current CBS and NBC News anchors, and finally the current President. The closing scene of tonight's newscast had the World News staff applauding Gibson around his desk.

On Monday, Diane Sawyer will take over. Coincidentially that's exactly 3 years before the day when the Mayans think the world will end. If it really does, blame it on Diane.

I enjoyed watching Gibson deliver the news after Peter Jennings died and wish him the best. Please share your thoughts, memories, praise, criticism, anything about Charles Gibson right here.

4. nobody will remember him, aside from being just another highly paid republican shill:
http://crooksandliars.com/2008/06/21/john-gibson-isnt-it-unfair-that-john-mccain-cant-raise-as-much-as-obama

As Jeff Cohen notes:

There was real emotion in his voice when ABC News anchor Charles Gibson used Friday night's newscast to stand up for little-guy McCain against online-fundraising powerhouse Barack Obama.

To me, the good news is that a network anchor was giving prominence to the plight of underfinanced candidates.

The bad news is that it's taken years to see an anchor make such a stand. And that Gibson (like other media voices in recent days) is making his stand for "fairness" against a candidate who has attracted 3 million contributions from 1.5 million donors giving an average donation of $91. In other words, against a candidate who is arguably less beholden to big-moneyed interests than McCain.

............

the above is just one of myriad examples (there are better, but I can't find them right away; this one works pretty well thoug. read the comments that follow the clips--pretty funny) of just how in the tank for the pugs this vapid blowhard was

good riddance

9. The Barack-Hillary debate was a shining moment
When he and Stephanopoulos worked like a couple of National Enquirer hacks trying to provoke a SHOCK-HORROR cover incident. Apparently, an informed public is a small sacrifice in the pursuit of riveting TV. Too bad the dumbass managed to achieve neither.

11. Fuck him and fuck his FAUX wannabe network
At least Murdoch restricts most of his right wing bullshit to his news division. ABC's gone right wing in their so called "entertainment" programming too.

Peter Jennings was OK, but they haven't had anything but blatant shills at the news desk since he died. And Chuckles was one of the worst, fucking Bush golf buddy that he is.

15. To clarify...
PBS, BBC, and the Internet are my main news sources; I watch the networks only if I'm busy on that day. I meant I enjoyed watching Gibson whenever I could, which might not have been every day. And hey...Fox News is MUCH worse.

if you liked to watch Gibson, that's cool. No harm in that. You don't have to apologize for what news shows, or what personalities, you watch. I watched Gibson too. Did we always agree? No. But I usually watched ABC news at 6:30 p.m. (my time) if I were home because ABC is Channel 8 where I live, which is our local affiliate. CBS and NBC affiliates in CT are up in the Hartford area. ABC is down in New Haven, closer to where I live. And I watched the local news at 6 and then ABC news at 6:30
