“America is going to have to learn... to live with some degree of sensational attacks.”
What was actually said by General Petraeus

"I don’t think you’re ever going to get rid of all the car bombs,” Petraeus said. “Iraq is going to have to learn – as did, say, Northern Ireland – to live with some degree of sensational attacks.”

Let's change a few words.

"I don’t think you’re ever going to get rid of all the planes crashing into buildings,” General X said. “America is going to have to learn – as did, say, Northern Ireland – to live with some degree of sensational attacks.”

Death and destruction - Get used to it.

I'm staggering under the weight of the arrogance and callous disregard of Petraeus' words.

1. He might actually beleive what he's saying
being the man who at the moment is trying to manage this insanity.

Your crushing feeling might be you simply recognizing the truth: without some fundamental changes to the way things work in the world, we're not ever going to get rid of terrorists.

3. Oh, I know full well we never will...which is why we should have never
treated a criminal act - terrorism - as an act of war.

It's the American exceptionalism inherent in his comment that I found arrogant and callous.

Iraqi's have to learn to live with it but Americans don't?

I don't think so.

4. Is It Maybe Time To Get Over The Sensationalism?

May one suggest that the people in USA get over the 'fainting and vapors' aspects of being attacked? One is not being callous or arrogant toward the victims of an attack, when one says that life goes on after an attack.

USA is strong enough to have empathy for the victims without losing heart. USA will not fall or fail because USA is attacked by some nut-case.

5. It is being callous and arrogant to tell the Iraqis to get used to it
Edited on Sun Apr-22-07 07:42 AM by Solly Mack
when America opted to go to war over a criminal act, to hide under their beds over a color code, and to live so much fear that some Americans wanted government to take their rights from them in exchange for "security" (a false sense though it be)

And yeah, America does need to stop getting the vapors over 911 and move the fuck on.

8. His comments are always "aimed" at an American audience
Edited on Sun Apr-22-07 07:55 AM by Solly Mack
All comments coming from the Bush war machine about Iraq are "aimed" at an American audience...to feed the people who believe the lies and those that need an excuse to feel better about what is happening

but that doesn't change what he said

11. "The Pentagon will have to learn to live with the CIA"
is what I think he's saying. The CIA is Dick and Junior's personal video game and doesn't have to follow any rules. That's probably why MI5 was so keen on blowing up Belfast cinemas and fruit shops back in the 80s.

12. Incredibly arrogant and callous
Particularly when one considers how completely unhinged a certain segment of any population gets after an attack, and the cynical manipulation and exploitation of that segment by the Bushies has been over the last six years. Iraqis are just going to have to learn to live with random car bombs going off at all hours (as if anyone could ever get used to such a thing), but Americans should absolutely go completely bonkers for as long as possible over any isolated incident. So much easier to exploit a population that's being encouraged to be wet-your-pants scared over every little thing. Hell, you could probably sell them the idea of stocking up on duct tape and plastic sheeting to ward off a chemical attack!
