Laura Bush paid $700 for a haircut
(snip)

Meanwhile, our favorite TV nugget of the day so far came courtesy of Barbara Walters, who matter-of-factly informed viewers that Laura Bush recently had her hair done by famed New York City stylist Sally Hershberger, who charges $700 for a haircut. Just take a moment to think back to the go-go '90s, and try to imagine what the press' hysterical reaction would have been if word ever leaked out that Hillary Clinton had sat down for a $700 trim.

8. Sure, and how about *'s $14,000 suits?
(snip)

"But Bush's past style lapses are forgivable because, since his inauguration he's been wearing some of the best tailored garments -- Oxxford suits."

- "This guiding principle ensures Oxxford continues to create top-notch garments for a price --$2,000 to $14,000 --that loyal customers are willing to pay."

- "Mr. Bush was so pleased with the fit of his tuxedo, suit, and topcoat and trousers that he immediately ordered six more garments."

:hi: Cat!!!

The GOP and the 'cowboys' in the CIA would all like to distract us from the real reasons behind the Attorney-gate firings,

"It's all part of a growing ongoing investigation into corruption in defense and intelligence contracts, which already has sent former Rep. Randy Duke Cunningham to prison and, legal sources say, may threaten others in Congress and the CIA. "

And the color job on her hair??? I have seen little old ladies do better by themselves with Lady Clairol, IMO.

i can understand maybe $200-300 for a cut by a "big name" sylist but there is nothing that anyone can do to hair (besides a transplant) that should cost over $400. damn.

John Edwards' hair looks like a million bucks.

Laura Bush's hair--on the other hand--looks like someone shoveled it

44. It's not about the haircut itself really,
it's that one could afford to pay $700 and that another one has to the gall to charge $700 that makes it special. The actual results of the cut are really meaningless.

It's kind of like eating eggs at a restaurant. One restaurant in town will charge a buck to fry an egg - another ten bucks. The two eggs come from the same chicken, they're fried at the same heat, flipped after cooking the same amount of time and each is put on a plain, white plate - both with a little parsley. Which restaurant serves the "best" eggs?

You can't tell the difference, right? Ok. Now, let me tell you the dollar egg restaurant has a cook named George who never finished high school and a server name Maggie who has two kids waiting at home - without a babysitter because she can't afford one. The ten dollar egg restaurant has a chef name Henri and a server named Paul - a very articulate, sharp dresser, with no one to care for but himself. He saves all his money and travels in the off season and is also working on his first novel. Oh, and we can't forget the hostess who greets you at the door with your name and a smile because she KNOWS who you are. Your favorite table is always ready for you and your guests - with or without reservations. Ok... I messed up my analogy - let's change the $10 egg to a $25 egg and you get linen napkins with your breakfast. Now, which restaurant server the "best" eggs? How much better do the eggs get when your friends find out you pay $25 for a fried egg? Or, how does that "down home" charm at the dollar egg restaurant affect your tastebuds?

People rarely pay for "things." They pay for the way things make them "feel" about themselves and how paying so much for something will make them appear to others. Haircuts and eggs are by-products of a social-positioning dance people who are concerned with social position play.

so no matter how many horrific things the Bushies do, gotta spend more time picking on minor things the dems do (haircuts) so people don't write her off as a liberal.

(Dowd has a cheap, mean, nasty column today entitled "Edwards Haircut".)

26. It's silly to pay that much, obviously, but ladies are different from men--
nobody is going to be outraged at this--this is what high-profile women must do, unfortunately. But a man really shouldn't be paying "lady" prices for a haircut. That's my own personal beef.

Okay, if you were to put an arrowhead on the side of it people would think she played for Kansas City, but it's not a horrid haircut.

It's a $35 haircut she paid $700 for, but it's not a bad haircut.

What she NEEDS to do is to dump the contents of her cosmetics drawer in the nearest trash can and spend $700 on makeup lessons and supplies. That Jack Nicholson look is s-o-o-o-o-o-o-o over with.

48. I don't know why either.
He did after all just release a plan on rural revitalization. In the scheme of things, you'd think that was more important. Or his plans on universal health care, energy and eliminating poverty. These are the issues that matter and his plans are detailed, specific and have the potential to change the course of our county.

I understand why the media doesn't focus on them. These are the same people who think the DNA results of Anna Nicole Smith's baby is the most pressing issue of the day.

I DON'T understand why the DU is having such a field day with this topic.

We should be focusing on McCain or Romney's campaign blunders.

It really confuses me on why we are so willing to chew up our own.

50. Haircuts are actually sort of expensive
Edited on Sun Apr-22-07 06:21 AM by cgrindley
but you only need a few a year. I pay, on average, about 250 bucks including tips to the stylist, colorist, and hairwash girl. But I only go maybe three times a year. Like manicures and pedicures, I started going for my second wedding, and have sort of become addicted. I can't go to supercuts anymore. Sure it's only 20 bucks but a real haircut really is 20 times better. I feel fairly guilty about it, but it's not like I have many vices--quit smoking last year, don't drink, don't do drugs, buy all of my clothes at the outlets on sale.

52. True, you get what you pay for.
No need to feel guilty. Your service providers most likely get paid fairly unlike stupercuts' service providers. A lot of the salon's portion goes to overhead. The salon probably uses a high quality color line too. Those color lines are very, very expensive for a salon to provide but good salons use them and it does matter.
