US Marines launch large Afghan offensive

US Marines launch large Afghan offensive
Dec 4, 8:54 AM EST

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- U.S. Marines and Afghan troops have launched the first offensive since President Barack Obama announced an American troop surge.

Maj. William Pelletier, a U.S. military spokesman, said about 1,000 Marines as well as Afghan troops launched Operation Cobra's Anger early Friday in the northern part of Helmand province.

The offensive aims at cutting off the Taliban communication routes through Helmand and disrupting their supply lines, especially those providing the explosives for the numerous lethal roadside bombs that litter the area.

So far there are no reports of casualties.

Obama announced Tuesday he was sending 30,000 new troops to Afghanistan. America's European allies have pledged another 7,000 soldiers.

30. No, the original name actually WAS "Liberation"
Until somebody pointed out that the acronym was just a little TOO honest.

34. Yeah-- didn't they change it either the day the operation began,
or the a few days before...? I remember the name had already percolated into the public consciousness. The morons in the Bush Administration apparently never bothered to have their slogan vetted by someone with a triple digit IQ before going public.

16. Maybe they're referring to
COBRA's anger in regards to ending the health insurance subsidy, because war is expensive.

For the average unemployed family who will lose the COBRA subsidy, their premiums will almost triple to $1,111 a month from $389, according to a report released Tuesday by Families USA, an advocacy group in Washington, DC. And $1,111 is about 83% of the average monthly unemployment check.

or maybe it's Operation Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act Anger.

Either way, this is going to hurt like hell and I guarantee in the end people will be angry.

but it isn't an officially licensed acronym from the RNC ... so it would never get into the "liberal media" ...

19. Well, according to...
this site...

http://www.wisegeek.com/how-are-names-for-military-operations-chosen.htm

"This new concept of assigning names for military operations based on public perception or sense of purpose has led to operation codenames such as Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. The original choice for the military invasion of Iraq in 2003 had been "Operation Desert Freedom", but it was eventually replaced with the more focused "Operation Iraqi Freedom" in order to avoid comparisons to the earlier military operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

Although the NICKA system for generating names for military operations has not be completely abandoned, many military and civilian commanders now prefer to assign more focused and inspirational names which help to define, and some might argue justify, the mission for the American public."

26. The PENTAGON.
We're all focused on the White House. But it's the Pentagon that runs the country. 44% of the two hours you work for the government every day of your working life goes to them. People don't seem to get it. I even have arguments with people on this forum over this. They have the guns. They have the money. They have the power. And they make the decisions. My proof is something that one can see with their eyes. When it comes to taking out someone like JFK, you can be they had a role. But I really am just generalizing and drawing conclusions here. I'm probably all wrong.
