Hunter ends up on school land in Kent: Man with shotgun seen near Roosevelt, removed by police

By Matt Fredmonsky

Record-Courier staff writer

<snip>

A school bus driver spotted the man at about 7:30 a.m. at Standing Rock Cemetery across from the high school. School employees relayed the information to Kent police, who confronted the man between the high school and middle school before 8 a.m.

He told police he was walking from his home on the east side of Kent to a property on Johnson Road in Franklin Township to do some hunting, Kent Police Lt. Jayme Cole said.

“At no time was there any threat to school kids,” Cole said. “But the guy just didn’t have a clue people might perceive him as a threat walking through a school zone with a gun.”

Cole said officers took the weapon, escorted the hunter off school property and took him to his destination in Franklin Township, but police did not arrest the man. The case is being reviewed and he eventually may face charges.

Can you believe this guy? What does it say about the right of imbeciles to bear arms?

1. *sigh*
40 years ago, this wouldn't have even been an issue, assuming the guy was just walking from point A to point B. Now, guns are "teh evil." And gun free zones have truly protected our children from school shooters. Oh way, I forgot, the "gun free zone" project is an abject failure.

Yeah, this guy was for sure being an air head, given the current political climate. But if you really think this is any sort of argument against the 2nd Amendment, then the logic and reasoning centers of your brain are in desperate need of repair.

2. Well, that didn't take long

Way to bring teh snotty. This is more about idiotic behavior than the 2nd Amendment. Does an imbecile get an infinite number of 'mulligans' before society takes notice? At what point do we say, 'that dumbass is going to hurt somebody or get himself killed. Maybe he shouldn't be packing firearms in public.'? If you say 'NEVER,' then I'd have to make the same assessment of your own higher brain functions.

3. We already have a system like that.
It's called a felony conviction. If the police believe the guy was honestly attempting to do harm, then they'll charge him as such. Heck, they may charge him just for being stupid. I honestly don't agree with the "gun free zones" concept in the first place, which is basically saying that this guy equates to somebody walking into the school itself with a shotgun, but it is the law.

Unfortunately, nobody has figured out a good cure for "teh stupid." And because "teh stupid" is at time subjective, it's difficult to argue that civil liberties should be restricted based on that alone.

4. Most importantly: Kent Police said, "At no time was there any threat to school kids,”

His only poor thinking was failing to realize how reactionary people are about the sight of guns. Your OP is another example.

True, he probably should have transported the shotgun in a gun sheath, bag, or case. Even wrapping it up in bathroom towel would have been more discreet.

Usually, there is some provision in the school safety zone laws to allow people to have a gun while transporting through a school safety zone, but I have no idea about Ohio law. I drive through 5 school safety zones with loaded guns every work day.

6. Seriously, what exactly does a "school safety zone" even accomplish?
Other than to make life difficult for people who have no intent to do anyone harm? Somebody interested in doing harm could give two shits less about a "school safety zone." It's laughable.

5. I can't say I wouldn't call the cops either.
The point is that you can't just let it go anymore because of the amount of stupid in the world. Some people may say he was in his rights and he probably was but until he is confronted and his intentions become clear I would default in my judgement that this guy is a threat.
