Proud of my husband this Thanksgiving--He got The Denver Rescue Mission a new stove!
Edited on Wed Nov-25-09 04:58 PM by librechik
The old kitchen they use down on Park Avenue is pretty near the end of its days and then some. And of course, this year they are looking to serve 750,000 more meals than they did last year.

It's totally heartbreaking these windy November days to drive by the place and see the crowds of hungry men--and some families--who wait patiently outside for mealtimes, huddling together to try to stay warm.

My husband is just a union baker, a working man, but his family has money passed down from a rich and wonderful aunt. When she passed on, they incorporated a family foundation and for the last 6 years have been giving Aunt Marg's money away to organizations which help to feed the homeless, as she wished. Marg herself grew up a poor farm orphan, and was grateful for the life she came to live after falling in love with one of Washington DC's most distinguished publishers. It didn't surprise anyone when she gave the bulk of her fortune to those without homes or hope. Despite her good fortune she was always humble and loved to help others.

My hubby has always been involved with The Denver Rescue Mission for his part in the foundation's charity. The fund is almost gone now, so when we saw the miserable shape the kitchen was in, we didn't know if we'd be able to help them in time for the holidays. Fortunately, with the help of the East Coast branch of the family we were able to switch some dollars around and get the DRM a big institutional stove so the kitchen won't catch on fire this year, and thousands of hungry people will get a nice Thanksgiving meal, who might not have.

Although I disagree with them and lose patience sometimes, I'm so thankful for my husband and my family, including those who are far away. They are wonderful, loving generous souls I'm lucky to know. I only wish and hope you all have loved ones you can be with this year both on the holidays and everyday. There are so many folks who don't.

Hooray for the Margret Pahl Stuart Family Foundation--and thanks for everything, Aunt Marg.
