Administration to fight hunger by asking us to feed our neighbors

Nice of them to offer a "toolkit of ideas" so we can solve this problem ourselves and not expect the sort of governmental help Wall Street can count on.

Vilsack said USDA wants to improve school lunch programs, and the government stimulus package has given more money to food stamps to help people hit by the recession.

"But the money is just part of it. It is important for people in communities across the country to understand that this is a problem in their community," he said.

The money is more than "just part of it." What part of "hit by the recession" do they think has nothing to do with money?

2. and while this debate goes on
there are mountains of grain piled on the ground in these parts because there is no room in the elevators, bins, trains, trucks, and barges.

12. Same as in the 1930's depression. Grain was sold overseas
while people went hungry here.

7. We are decent human beings, and he was elected to solve problems, not preach.
I don't recall the administration offering Wall Street a "Bail Out Your Fellow Corporations" initiative, with a handy toolkit of ideas exhorting them to help one another with their Wall Street "community" problems.

Urging private charity in lieu of an adequate government safety net is an approach we'd expect from Republicans, and nail them for.

Hunger can't be treated as essntially a "community" problem to be solved by individuals within the community when the rate of hunger is increasing because of rising unemployment, and the communities with the highest unemployment rates and the most individuals going hungry will inevitably have the fewest individuals able to help them.

6. Exactly. Governmental charity for the war machine and Wall Street.
Americans going hungry in a recession with unemployment at over 10%? That's just a "community" problem. :sarcasm:

13. Thanks!
And I agree that this is the administration's way of saying, "Hunger? Not our problem."

Which is something I really didn't expect from a Democratic administration, with Democrats controlling both the House and the Senate.

9. HOLY SHIT NEW IDEA: How about we mandate people to feed their kids?
Edited on Wed Nov-25-09 01:13 AM by anonymous171
If they don't they can either pay a hefty fine or (if they can't afford it) they can spend a couple of months in jail as punishment for the gross negligence. PROBLEM SOLVED! ;)

10. Tell the churches to feed the hungry
I think that is part of their mission. They want to tell everyone how to be then they can show us how it is suppose to be.

Their god would be so proud of them.......
