He Didn't Have To Pick A Republican
I disagreed with Obama's Appointment of Dana Perino to the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG)

http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5gpxs-A7_KeHNXFlGtrDZ-QzIw-Fw
So, I posted a thread

Obama-Please Tell Me You're Joking
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=7053319&mesg_id=7053319

Several DU'ers responded that he had to pick a republican

The thread started with e few rec's but went into negative rec's after it was pointed out that Obama was forced to pick a republican

As, it turns out he didn't have to pick a republican.

He just was not allowed to pick a democrat

One does not equal the other

(b) Composition of Board
(1) The Board shall consist of 9 members, as follows:
(A) 8 voting members who shall be appointed by the President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate.
(B) The Secretary of State who shall also be a voting member.
(2) The President shall appoint one member (other than the Secretary of State) as Chairman of the Board, subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
(3) Exclusive of the Secretary of State, not more than 4 of the members of the Board appointed by the President shall be of the same political party.

I still don't see why he would pick the Bush Administration spokesperson

1. to annoy the shit out of YOU
That is why Obama does everything. They pick one random internet user and find something that will stupidly piss them off.

Works well doesn't it.

6. Actually, that's pretty much it.
To tringulating DLC-type politicians, "poking liberals in the eye" is synonymous with "bipartisanship".

and you have no idea what they actually do, but that doesn't mean you can't be outraged.

4. No, he didn't, but
the nominee has to be conformed by the Senate, and he probably didn't want to pick a fight on such an unimportant position.

11. With appointments like this, the opposing party's Senators usually make recommendations to
the President with the understanding that they will not oppose the Democrats whom the President picks for that particular board. No one in the Senate really wants to waste a lot of time arguing about a low-profile board like this.

18. Bingo!
It's just part of the horse trading that goes on in DC all the time. BTW, didn't one of Obama's judicial nominees just get the green light yesterday? Quid Pro Quo?

5. 5 Dems to 4 repubs. Dana will be powerless on that board
so who cares? Something tells me they will vote in unison on most things anyway...

10. The Dems should have run this lke the pukes did. Have the Dems on the board
switch parties (or go independent). Then, Obama could appoint more Dems.

Simple.

Effective.

Maybe that is why they didn't do it.

12. He didn't do that
simply because he isn't an asshole. Just because a scumbag repuke would probably have done that is no reason for Obama to do it. Shit, my fundie neighbor often walks the neighborhood trying to talk to folks about Gawd, doesn't mean I should go around talking to them about the lack of one.

shouldn't she be barred from anything but spinning tales for celebrity clients? Especially from being a trusted public servant. that just blows. Is Obama asleep? was he asleep the last 9 years? Sometimes I wonder what the chess player is up to.

23. I enjoy that when Obama governs the way he promised
and people get mad. While he didn't have to pick a Republican, it was argued yesterday he did the traditional thing of differing the the recommendation of the other party. He could have thumbed his nose at this, but he promised America he was not going to do this. He was going to go beyond pointless partisan politics. Yet he will once again (just like his tax cut he promised and delivered) won't get any credit for doing what he said he would do.
