A United Nations special investigator who was blocked from visiting the US by the Bush administration has accused the American government of pouring billions of dollars into rescuing banks and big business while treating as "invisible" a deepening homeless crisis.

Raquel Rolnik, the UN special rapporteur for the right to adequate housing, who has just completed a seven-city tour of America, said it was shameful that a country as wealthy as the US was not spending more money on lifting its citizens out of homelessness and substandard, overcrowded housing.

"The housing crisis is invisible for many in the US," she said. "I learned through this visit that real affordable housing and poverty is something that hasn't been dealt with as an issue. Even if we talk about the financial crisis and government stepping in in order to promote economic recovery, there is no such help for the homeless."

She added: "I think those who are suffering the most in this whole situation are the very poor, the low-income population. The burden is disproportionately on them and it's of course disproportionately on African-Americans, on Latinos and immigrant communities, and on Native Americans."

1. Watching what our government DOES tells us all we need to know.
I do not listen to words anymore.
I look.
And I am seeing the same old thing, accelerated.
And the same old thing is also a form of intimidation to those of us who are NOT (yet) homeless.

9. That is not an accusation...
...it is simple, demonstrable fact. Our government at every level studiously ignores and demonizes homeless people.

It's easy, because there are always enough crazies and addicts (alcohol and other drugs) among them to justify the distaste of the "solid citizens".

We look down on India and its caste system, with the "untouchables" on the lowest rung, and yet we have our own version of it right here at home.

But ours is better, see, because it's all based on merit. As in, the banksters have *earned* the right to live in mansions and pay $1,000 for lunch if they want to, because after all they went to school for many years to learn how to underwrite predatory lending, foreclose people out of house and home, commit international financial fraud, &c &c &c.

Our government is hardened to the plight of its people. The demagogues also do their part, ensuring that racial and class divisions continue to encourage ignorance and hate against those less fortunate.

We talk about China and its prison labor, while we have more people in prison, as a percentage and in sheer numbers than China does with its authoritarian government and so many more people than we have.

But we're the greatest, so that's all okay then. :sarcasm:

10. So what else is new?
Seriously, we've blithely accepted the continuing marginalization and criminalization of poverty for over 30 years, while in the same time period we've forced most of the pension/retirement funds into the financial sector and saved the institutions from insolvency by eating their losses 4 times.

20. It's easy to explain in my own case, anyway.
I post very rarely, and haven't started an OP in ages. What little I have to say goes largely unnoticed. I'm simply under the radar, which is fine by me. ;)

16. And the UN has jurisdiction, how? This dilutes their important human rights work...
like the inquiry by Justice Goldstone in Gaza.

But what the hey -- a pity kick for a sock puppet who is no longer with us to disrupt discussion among Democrats.
