Chocolate milk lovers have a cow about bans (in schools)
Chocolate milk lovers have a cow about bans

The dairy industry rolled out an expensive media campaign this week in praise of chocolate milk, a classic school lunch beverage whose sugar content is under assault in some districts.

But as trade groups spend upward of $1 million to defend the drink, three area fifth-graders already have come to its rescue.

A year after Barrington Community Unit School District 220 banned flavored milk from its lunch menus, the students persuaded administrators to give it another chance. Now the sweetened drinks are served on Fridays as the district tries to decide whether the benefits of calcium and vitamin D are worth the added sugar.

"Kids weren't drinking the white milk," said Haley Morris, 10, the leader of the young advocates. "It's better to have the chocolate milk than nothing."

Barrington's dairy dilemma is an example of a discussion playing out across the country, as educators try to reconcile two concerns: childhood obesity and insufficient calcium intake.

Even some experts have trouble coming up with a satisfying answer.

"Flavored milk has more calories from the sweeteners that are in it. There's no getting around that," said Dr. Frank Greer, former chairman of the nutrition committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics. "It is an uncomfortable position to be in when you're asked this question. I say it comes down to too many calories or, well, it's better than other things in the soda machine."

Banning Chocolate milk is a little too militant for me. I understand soda as it has no redeming value but chocolate milk is taking PC a little too far.

3. I hate white milk! I never drank it as a kid & still don't!
My mother told me I didn't like it as a baby...used to throw my bottle out of the bed & playpen. I'm 66 now, and still not overweight. I think it's foolish for the school to ban chocolate milk. I can understand sodas and snack machines, but I think they'd be much better off getting the kids to WANT to play outside, playing physical games, getting exercize.

42. I add ice cubes to white milk
and it has a better flavor. But if people read labels, most chocolate milk says it is fat free, low fat etc just like the white milk. And if you check labels you can see it is...like diabetics should eat wheat bread..well read the labels. Most wheat has 43 carbs as opposed to 30 some with regular.

The only white milk he had was on cereal. It was easier to let him drink the chocolate milk than to fight him about drinking white. (Pick your battles and all that shit!)

7. some facts
http://caloriecount.about.com/calories-milk-chocolate-fluid-commercial-lowfat-i1104

commercial whole milk=........ 170 calories..26 grams sugar
2% milk=................................ 122 calories..12 grams sugar
lowfat choc milk=................... 158 calories..24.9 grams sugar

obviously 2% milk is probably best, but why not cold water? or unsweetened iced tea?

61. My husband's diabetic as well.. perhaps you should email the site and
and inform them of their error..although they listed the USDA nutrition panel with each of the about 60 different brands of milk, and types of milk.. To us, milk is milk, and rarely every drunk in this household.

the reason I even posted the damned link was so people could click it, and perhaps find their own brand of milk & cpmpare...not to piss anyone off or to be told I made a "mistake".. No mistake was made.. I MEANT to post the USDA nutrition info. and I meant to post the link, so people could go there and peruse..or not.. I did not just make up numbers to add to the confusion:)

66. Yet you continue to profess that the link is correct as if there is a whole milk
that contains the same amount of carbs/sugars as chocolate milk. You did not provide a link to the product that supposedly contains this only a generic link to the site where people can look it up.

Again I will say it there is no whole milk with the same sugars/carbs as chocolate milk. It doesn't exist.

Prove me wrong and produce a link to the supposed product you looked up and ill be more than happy to write them and let them know their info is erroneous until then I am going to assume the mistake was yours.

I am only telling you, you made a mistake is because you continue to assert that it is true. Despite me posting actual links from the usda site as opposed to your calorie king site or whatever it was.

Posting misleading info as fact is not helpful.

and you will change your mind too. Try Notmilk.com for starts.

I am not a vegetarian, often eat take out and foods that are not the best, try to eat organic but in the end milk is not a good food for you.

In fact it is just the opposite. But the dairy industry has been such a powerful force in this country that the message has been kept down for such a long time.

I use it for homemade noodles, cereal, etc. I don't drink it usually (unless I can mix it with something like Kahlua....) but I find it quite useful in a number of ways.

Do you have a good replacement for it?

dairy allergy. I miss a slice of fresh mozzarella cheese with tomato and basil the most.

As for a substitute, there is none that meets the real thing. Milk I can do without. Cheese and pizza is what I miss. Some of the soy cheeses out there are mediocre at best.

I do soy milk and fake butter, which honestly is pretty good.

40. Though the gene required to digest it as adults has evolved at least 3 separate times
Many groups have developed specialised eating habits due to their lifestyle. One such habit that has been identified as a genetic trait is the ability to digest milk as an adult. All infant mammals rely on milk for sustenance but, as they grow older, the enzyme that digests lactose (a sugar found in milk) disappears. This means adult mammals cannot normally tolerate milk. However, as a result of an agricultural ancestry, some adults, like the Masai of Kenya, the Beduoin and most Europeans, are still able to digest milk. Others, such as Australian Aborigines and west and central Africans, find milk indigestible. This adaptation probably only evolved in the last 10,000 years as agriculture developed and animal milk was collected and consumed.

http://australianmuseum.net.au/How-do-we-affect-our-evolution

If you have the gene, it's a good source of nutrition.

Honestly? Can't say I care if milk isn't that good for you. I love chocolate milk and I love cheese. I am overall physically healthy. You only live once and given that I am overall healthy despite my food choices I would rather spend my life enjoying the things I feel taste best.

77. Are you serious?
You cannot compare the two. Vets tell pet owners NOT to give puppies and kittens milk when they are past the weaning stage for a good reason. It is not healthy. Not only do we continue this process we do it with another animals milk which is meant for a baby cow. Can you imagine giving human breast milk to animals? We have been so acculturated to milk that we automatically assume it is ok. Plus the dairy industry is incredibly strong.

If you want to drink milk or eat milk products that is fine. But to remain ignorant of the health reasons that are valid is silly. I am not a milk nazi. I do not drink it because I am highly allergic to it. If I could I would. I miss pizza and cheese alot. But there are plenty of reasons, especially with the way milk is processed today, to be wary of it.

I was in elementary school in the late 70's and, at that time, chocolate milk was what pretty much all the kids drank in my town.

I remember this clearly, there was a "milk box" containing exactly 4 white milks (for the responsible parents, i guess), exactly ONE skim milk (for the overly crazy parents lol), and the rest of the box was chocolate milk (probably 15-18 cartons).

I can't speak for all of America, but that's what I was accustomed to anyway...I'm pretty sure most of the kids would've thrown out the white milk if they were forced to take it.

47. They gave you milk?
We had to climb down the mountain and catch a yak and milk it ourselves! And we LIKED it that way!

59. We got reconstituted milk from dried milk powder
Nasty, nasty stuff. Since most of the kids hated it, the lunch ladies tried to be creative with it by mixing it with other things we hated but that they got free from Department of Agriculture, such as prunes. They came up with the infamous Prune Fluff which was vile, but a vast source of ammunition for food fights; it went well with the pea green walls of the lunch room. It also made for some awesome dares - no one ever wanted to discuss the results of the contest to see who could eat the most Prune Fluff.

If the lunch ladies had mixed the milk powder with chocolate, it would have been a different story. When I was a kid, Mom made "instant chocolate milk" by mixing dried milk with Nesquik powder. When she was at work in the mornings we kids could make hot chocolate by mixing that with hot tap water. This was long before the packaged stuff came out - Mom could have made a fortune if she'd thought of putting the stuff in little envelopes!

38. Dropkid will drink either one
She prefers chocolate of course. I've always hated milk and chocolate milk is disgusting so I always drank the "orange drink" stuff or water.

52. I never liked school choc milk, always drank white milk their.
Now at home I'd always (and still do today) mix Nesquick choc syrup and whole milk to have my chocolate milk, that stuff is just heaven.

63. When I was a kid, we drank chocholate milk and hot chocolate frequently,
and there were very few fat kids. The difference was that we got more exercise than kids today. We walked to school, eating between meals was considered bad for you ("It'll spoil your appetite for dinner"), and we ran around outside and played after school.

65. That's a good way to stop kids from drinking milk.
School plain milk always tasted like they left it out to long ant it had a slight spoiled taste to it. After I got sick after drinking it I never touched the stuff at school again.

67. Take away recess and gym but grandstand on chocolate milk, smart.
:sarcasm:

I don't know what type of physical activity the kids are getting in this particular school district but too many schools now are focusing on little issues like milk or homemade snacks instead of looking at the large picture and helping students develop healthier lifestyles.
