Targeting Gunshots with Acoustic Sensors
The ability to locate a shooting quickly can help police catch bad guys and save lives. In Richmond, California, acoustic gunfire detection is doing just that. With acoustic sensors distributed around the city, dispatchers can use the sound of gunfire to pinpoint where a shooting happened, the number of shots fired, and even the kind of gun that was used.

Now this is a good idea.

1. Good idea until it starts being used for other purposes
I can see where acoustic sensors spread around town could be used for all sorts of other Big Brother type of activities, and our law enforcement has proven to be eager to exploit all of those.

Cameras on every light pole, microphones in every bush. Glad I live in the country, in a rural area that can't afford this sort of high tech bullshit.

2. I did consider that.
I always have a caveat that reads "unless it is used....". I should always put it in.

If it is kept to this use, it seems to really be a valuable tool.

They have probably already been installed in major cities for nefarious purposes by the CIANSAFBIDHS otherwise known as the WWW - 'Witless Warrantless Weenies."

3. it's really just another excuse for fewer police on the street. Soon
we will all be recorded each time we leave home - what fun!

Recorders in all new TV's, phones, cells, computers will be next.

5. Cities are cutting
law enforcement budgets. If this uses the people out there more efficiently, then it is probably a better than nothing.

Caveat about misuse.*
