Did Ambassador John Negroponte get blackballed by an exclusive club at Yale? The top diplomat, who worked for three Republican presidents (Ronald Reagan and both George Bushes) and once served as deputy secretary of state, is a Yale grad (1960) and now teaches international securities studies at the Ivy League university. A source said he applied to join the Elizabethan Club literary society. "It's the most elite club at Yale, even more than Skull and Bones," said our insider. Its collection of priceless rare books includes Shakespearean folios and first editions of Milton's "Paradise Lost" and Spenser's "Faerie Queene." Negroponte's aide, Christopher Hutt, denied the story, telling us, "The ambassador says he has never heard of it."

Sen. John Kerry, a Vietnam veteran, may have done a good deed the other night at the Oak Bar in the Plaza Hotel. The Democrat had a quick bite and drink with his daughter, Alexandra, near a group of 25 Marines with the top brass of the USS New York. When the leathernecks were done and asked for the bill, they learned someone had grabbed their check and paid it in cash. "We don't know who," said one source. "It was over $1,000."
