| Women Are Overtaking Men in the U.S. |
|
(Nov. 5) -- The United States may have officially entered the age of woman.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this fall, for the first time in U.S. history, women have surpassed men and now make up more than 50 percent of the nation's workforce. In 1967, by comparison, they accounted for just one-third of all workers.
Signs of the changing landscape in gender relations are just about everywhere you look:
• Double the number of single women are now purchasing homes in America than there are single men. • Four out of every 10 women are are now their family's primary breadwinner, a sharp increase from past decades. • The New Hampshire State Legislature is now made up of a majority of women, a first for a legislative body in the U.S., and the number of women in government continues to edge up nationwide. • Women now account for 30 percent of math Ph.D.s, up from just 5 percent in the 1960s. • On average, women read nine books every year. Men only read four, and women account for 80 percent of the U.S. fiction market.
"Women really have become the dominant gender," said Guy Garcia, author of "The Decline of Men." "What concerns me is that guys are rapidly falling behind. Women are becoming better educated than men, earning more than men, and, generally speaking, not needing men at all. Meanwhile, as a group, men are losing their way."

A real charmer, I'm sure.
|
| 136. IMO, I've seen that go both ways. |
|
I know several women who don't want a man around unless they want to fuck him. Then its adios until they call again. I can't tell how many times I've heard women talking about having a "boy toy."
My position is its mutual, but at the same time there are plenty of other things besides sex or the expectation of sex female friends and I will do.
I don't see any problem with it..

The guy's post you responded to didn't say anything any different than the post he responded to. And my post was just merely pointing out that neither side has a monopoly on using the opposite sex, and, that not all circumstances of no commitment are based in some sort of negativism. On the contrary, most are mutual.

not a serious response.
I'm not bent out of shape... just taking an opportunity to point out how awful it is. The sentiment is often (and earnestly) either directly said or implied (that sex is all men desire from women).
|
| 150. "Sex is all men desire from women" |
|
And all I tried to point out is that there are plenty of women who I know who are only interested in men as a "boy toy." Is the ratio between men and women with this attitude about equal? Probably not, but, any suggestion that all men only look at women because of sex is just plainly false.
Another thing I think women fail to understand in this picture is the role of testosterone. Not that I am giving any excuses for inappropriate behavior, because, I am not. Inappropriate behavior is inappropriate behavior. Nevertheless I know woman wish men better understood their hormone causes which drive certain behavior from them. That's all I am saying about testosterone. Women don't know what its like to have this sex driving hormone raging throughout your body 24/7.
Both sexes have their quarks. n/t

"any suggestion that all men only look at women because of sex is just plainly false."
Exactly. That's why every time it is brought up I can't resist pointing out how horrible it is to say such a thing.
As for hormones... both sexes have their challenges to endure and overcome. Only one is widely encouraged by peers to revel / wallow in it.
|
|
What exactly did you mean in one of your previous posts when you said: "what some friends of yours are like?" I might be incorrect in my assumption, but, that doesn't pass the smell test.
I mean that wouldn't be something like when a homophobe refers to gay couples as to how gay people are like, or, when a racist refers to minorities as to how minorities are like would it? Maybe I am incorrect, but, that comment sure doesn't look good - it appears to be bigoted.
Just asking so I'll know what type of person I am responding to. Thanks.

You said that some women you know are like that - they want nothing to do with men except for sex.
All I was saying is that it's all well and good that some of your friends are the same, but since they're not here to share their support for such a shitty way of being, it's kind of beside the point, isn't it? We're all very aware that there are people of both sexes who hold shitty views about the other sex.
I like that though... "what type of person I am responding to"... very informative about yourself.
|
| 160. Thanks for the clarity. |

Glad to see you're the type person without prejudice instead of the type person with prejudice. Prejudice against prejudice type people is acceptable. Again, glad to see you're not prejudice.

black widows. We have both, and I have known many people to have been bitten by the recluse. I only know one person who got bitten by a widow. I would rather come across a black widow than a brown recluse any ole day. Plus they are much more identifiable. I am always iffy on certain spiders that look a lot like a recluse, but I always know if it is a black widow.

Also known as crab spiders or jewel spiders. We get variations of those here in California. Very cool looking spider.
For those who have never been around one, they can look intimidating, but aren't really dangerous. Their bite is slightly painful (similar to a bee sting) but is largely nonpoisonous. At worst, the area right around the bite might swell up for an hour or so, but most people don't even have that problem.

We have Argiopes where I live...and Carolina Wolf Spiders. Those are fun at night. All I have to do to see how many wolfies are in my yard is step out and shine a flashlight in the yard. I can see their eyes. They run 10 mph too. I've learned to live just fine as long as they don't come inside and scare my boy cat. He's afraid of big spiders.

transformer covers for underground electrical wiring...shiny, small, black stay away. My grandfather was bitten by a brown recluse that was in his shoe. That nasty bite took months to heal. When I was in elementary school we were taught to identify those two types of spiders. Just leave them alone. We were taught to check shoes before putting them on. Along with the dangerous snakes and snapping turtles, just try to get away and leave them be. The baby snakes are the worst for me as they don't always look like the adults and are every bit as dangerous. I've fished them out of our pool and this year I found a baby alligator snapping turtle in the skimmer. I'm careful and usually okay with it, until it hits me that the grown ones are around. Roaches sent me into the stratosphere though, especially the large winged ones that I experienced in S. Georgia...no thanks, a smash fest with whatever is available.

The mosquitoes aren't quite what they are in mid-MS as they are in the MS delta. I think the river has something to do with it, but in the delta, they are gigantic, and there are so many of them that it is freaky. You can't go outside after dusk and not be bombarded with them. Luckily, they aren't the type that really carry West Nile, but you will be eaten up. I gripe about them so much in the summer here. My baby is so allergic. We made many doctor visits from bites that turned into impetigo. They were twice the size of a quarter on her little ole body. We even bought a mosquito net to cover her bed. I can't imagine if I still lived in the delta. And the no see ums? Well they suck because you don't see them. They are tearing you up and you can't even find them to smack them. UGH!! I still see no purpose for mosquitoes and roaches. They should be extinct. And they will probably be the last surviving creatures on the planet.

Now, the black widows and brown recluses get killed. Some poor little brown recluse look alikes get smashed too. And now there are these brown widows. But be careful, I was just trying to push a wolf spider away the other day, wasn't killing it, and all of a sudden, thousands of baby spiders emerged. Unfortunately for them, most of them got smushed. I couldn't have a thousand spiders on my floor with my 1 year old walking about. Or even if I didn't have a baby, a thousand spiders is creepy. But I do not kill regular ole house spiders. Or any bugs for that matter. EXCEPT roaches. And I don't kill them. My husband does. ICK!

You know, most of the workplace deportment rules were supposed to make the workplace a safer more pleasant place to be. In reality, "professional" HR departments turned all that on its head, by removing common sense and intent from the equation, by basing the standard or the most fragile and unbalanced person imaginable.

When men make 75 cents to every dollar a woman makes... when women are the majority in almost every legislative body in the country... when there's a woman in the WH... when reproductive rights are totally secured...
then perhaps I'll be concerned. Right now, it's seeming like the world might be a better place if women were the ones in charge for a while.

As if having women in the workforce and having purchasing power is somehow a bad thing for men. Never mind that those women are still working in corporate environments established and controlled by men, in which all the rules and biases favor men. From this article you would think women are taking over.
|
| 7. More than half the workforce, but making 77% the money. |
|
Improvement, yes. Parity in $$, no. But, that may be on the outs, too. I liked hearing this: In 2009, for instance, women will earn more degrees in higher education than men in every possible category, from associate level to Ph.D.s, according to the U.S. Department of Education. When it comes to master's-level education, for instance, U.S. women earn 159 degrees for every 100 awarded to men.
|
|
Women make up half the US population, and he's upset because ONE state legislature out of FIFTY has a majority of women.
Nothing worse than a male supremacist whining because their hold on the power structure is at 98% instead of 100.
|

Keep the plumbing fixed, run out into wind storms and fix the power lines, go to work at 4 am, make it home by 6 pm.

I'll be sitting here watching ESPN. It's a sweet deal for the men.

Edited on Mon Nov-09-09 12:52 PM by Kalyke
Hey - it's what my ex does.
|
| 148. From the sidelines it's hard to imagine why any of these folks married each other. |
|
The men are all scuzbags who work off the books to avoid spousal and child support. The women are all total bitches who go out of their way to make life miserable for everyone involved. The judges are so stupid, they would have to see a woman actually smoking a crack pipe to judge her the lesser parent, or see a man actually sporting a halo to judge him the better parent. Have I left anyone out?
My favorite, is the exwife who goes to court to get support increased, because the exhusband got a second job to make up for the money he's paying the exwife.
The surprising thing isn't that married people kill each other, it's that so few kill each other.

Appallingly not funny "Female murder victims are substantially more likely than male murder victims to have been killed by an intimateIn recent years - About one third of female murder victims were killed by an intimate. About 3% of male murder victims were killed by an intimate. Of all female murder victims, the proportion killed by an intimate has been increasing. Of male murder victims, the proportion killed by an intimate has dropped." http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/homicide/intimates.htm Don't mind me though, I'm just another humorless feminist...
|
| 157. I wasn't joking. It's an observation. |
|
People are killed every day for less than what goes on in a marriage, separation, or divorce. People have been killed over pocket change, an x box, a bottle of liquor or small amount of drugs, an insult or perceived insult, a misunderstanding. That someone who specializes in making another person's life miserable (frequently a person that he/she himself/herself has claimed is dangerous to the point of a restraining order) is killed in that pursuit, is not surprising, and it is indeed surprising that it doesn't happen more often.

It's just when people talk about spouses killing each other, since it's often the woman who ends up dead (and being personally invested in the statistics myself), I admit to lacking a sense of humor about it.
|
| 163. BTW, thanks for the website, it's interesting. So what is your theory? |
|
Significant drop in women killing men, while men killing women is fairly stable. My first thought was that a big chunk of the female on male had been recategorized, but nothing on that webpage explains it that way. Then, it doesn't explain it at all.

|
But that's neither a theory I can immediately provide statistics for nor one that I care to argue about on DU.
I do think there are ******!!!!!!SOME!!!!!!******* men in our world who are pretty pissed off about the achievements of women and feel a loss of control and power who end up taking it out on the women in their lives. But I have to tell you, I don't have time to pursue a lengthy discourse about it right now. Sorry.
(Which is too bad because it feels like an eternity since I've had the opportunity to actually discuss an issue on DU. I really do have to run and will be in class tonight. Maybe later. Thanks for asking.)
|
| 162. Um... in my case, it's actually provable. |
|
Edited on Mon Nov-09-09 02:42 PM by Kalyke
I know where he works (under the table) and have reported this, but nothing is done. He owes me around $10,000 in back child support.
I specifically said that my ex was working under the table IN MY CASE and wasn't really offering too much statistical back-up.
Oh - and the joke about the ex wife demanding more money because the ex husband got a second job is ridiculous. Child support tables are based on the non-custodial parent's TOTAL income (not just his day job); therefore, if he earns more money, he's entitled to pay more in support. As it is, it's only 21 percent for the first child and somewhat less for each subsequent child. That's not a man's entire income - not by a long shot.
However, you decided to make the fabulously unfunny joke about married people killing one another.
I don't know about you, but I'm fairly indifferent regarding my ex and don't give a shit about him enough to even think about killing him. The money he owes, he owes to our son - not to me.

One must ask the basic ethical question, I suppose: What is their intent?

| 175. I usually hate quoting myself, but... |
|
"...adversity (according to the article)"
I won't name names, I'm not sure I am allowed to, but I have seen a couple posts from women either joking about it (assuming it is a false phenomenon) or thinking it is a good thing. Remember, the article said -overtaking-, not equilibrium or balance.
Of this we are not sure if the article is true or he is just blowing smoke, that would require further research. I do, however, doubt these same people would be so dismissive of an article about women in a similar situation (whose truth cannot be instantly obtained) and would quite literally flip out should men make jokes about females "staying in the kitchen".

However, I think the average man is being ill served by our government.

"Check out" of this disgusting consumerist culture...

| 115. I have a friend with three adult male children, none of whom have a job |
|
they all live with their dad and his new wife. They just don't "want" to work. Well hell, most of us would rather not be working, but that's just part of being an adult. All three are fairly attractive and intelligent, but not one has a girlfriend; why would anyone want to get involved with a lazy deadbeat? Her sons constantly hit her up for money even though she's unemployed. It's pathetic. And they are hardly alone; another 48 year old man I know has been supported by his wife's 38k income for 7 years. He won't help around the house except to do a little laundry, never helps out with the kids. It's only a matter of time before she kicks him out. Other women I know have already done the same with their deadbeat boys and husbands. Boys are under-performing girls in school, enrolling less than women in college...what gives? Was Bart Simpson a roll model for half the boys in this country a decade or two ago? Why the lack of drive and ambition? I think that women are doing what has to be done to survive, but why men are increasingly dropping out and moving back in with mom and dad...? Is it only an American phenomenon of is it global?

| 123. one of the hallmarks of poor communities is a high rate of unemployment |
|
or underemployment among men w/ correspondingly higher employment for women.
this isn't good news, it's another sign of the impoverishment of the citizenry.
w/ the poorer employment prospects also goes more family pressure & less family cohesiveness; consequently bad effects on kids.

| 145. Exactly. What is the purpose of work beyond merely earning another dollar? |
| 151. I think it is American (but not exclusively) |

I really believe the social upheavals of the last century are still reverberating. It a huge social change to go from a primarily agrarian/rural norm where large families were economic boons and most jobs were muscle/sweat based to a modern urban lifestyle where kids are expenses, not assets (financially) and most jobs, even so called menial ones, are not based on muscle power.
These are often overlooked factors in the gender/job discussions. I know it is accepted that men "ruled" women and kept them down through history until women got fed up and began fighting in the 60s and 70s, but accepted isn't always right. The truth is that effective and available birth control, along with mechanization set the stage. Society (yes, men and women) was slow to change as it always is. People tend to expect and pursue a family structure similar to what they experienced. It took generations after large families had mostly lost their advantage before people even tried to limit the number of children. It also took a long time after it was neccessary to get used to women working outside the home.
We've been struggling to make adjustments to these things. There isn't a blueprint for social change (and really, no coherent or widely agreed upon paths). I firmly believe that women need and deserve opportunities to enter every professional field. More than that, they have needed (and still need in too many fields) affirmative action to break into traditionally male areas.
However, we also tend to try to fix things that are fixed (or well on their way to being fixed). For instance, we noticed that men dominated higher education and got more college degrees. By the time we launched programs to encourage women academically, women were already beginning to dominate in schools and colleges.
We forget that telling a senior in high school "OK, now young women can get engineering degrees" is pretty pointless if she spent her entire 12 years until then believing that marriage or maybe the steno pool were her choices. Telling a 1st grader the same information can make a huge difference, but of course, you won't know that for 12 years.

I for one, welcome our new female overlords. And as long as I may still pretend to know where I'm going and attempt to get there without asking for directions, I shall remain content, somewhat befuddled and happy.
