I'm being selfish: I have a major pre-existing condition, cancer, that happened 26 years ago but is still held against me. I need insurance. I want a bill to pass where my past cannot be used against me.

I doubt this will mean insurance for me or my friend who I convinced that electing this president would make that happen for him. I can't understand the folks here who are so hostile to those of us who are understandably cynical about the politics-as-usual being practiced in front of us. Incremental change may well be good for some. It can be a worthwhile enterprise. Health insurance for children was a worthwhile example of incremental change. The argument I recognize against this effort is that the insurance companies are still in control of costs which are expected to continue to rise. What happened to the proven cost-controlling pools? Why is the public option allowed to be handled like a poor step-child? This is lousy politics.(maybe all we can expect) Disgusting.

I'm an optimist; even when dim son was in there, I was. I find this admin vastly more intelligent and understandable. I don't demand immediate gratification either.

This is a huge bill. It will never satisfy everyone, or maybe anyone. But it's a step in the right direction for something better.

THE election of Barack Obama will be a validation of hope. It will be an affirmation of the hope of millions of voters, including many who have never believed in the political system before - some old enough to remember when there were very real barriers to their participation.

The value of his election will be a suspension of apathy for many; hopefully, enough to spark the kind of attention to the workings of our political system that we will need to motivate our legislators into action and to effect the changes we're seeking.

You are way out of line here babylonsister. I NEVER disrespect the president in my posts here and ALWAYS provide more than enough of an argument to support my objections (which don't always concern issues the president is actively engaged in). It's cracking me up that it's YOU who dragged the president into these series of posts. My initial comments on this post concerned what the CONGRESS is engaged in - not a (direct) criticism of the president at all. If I say it's storming outside will you accuse me of blaming the president for the clouds?

My big sister, a brilliant woman who is not prone to support "the system", nor does she let President Obama off of the hook easily either, has been looking at this bill more closely than I and just called to say, though it isn't big, it is a fundamental change in things.

15. I'm wondering how it can be developed into something more. I really would like to see

Americans have more access to Preventative & Complementary Health Services. I am disappointed about this and don't see how it can be built onto what they are doing tonight.

On the other hand, there is a fundamental shift in how Long-Term Care will be paid for in this bill. Making it possible for more people to obtain LTC without spending down their assets in order to get Medicare. That is a good thing.
