I don't think that a public option can coexist with private insurance companies. Both cannot be. We will either have a false public option or private insurance will go pretty much the way of the Dodo.
But both cannot be.

The Dems made a mistake repeatedly saying that it will "bring competition" to the insurance companies. No! Two different things! That is staying in the paradigm of "free market profit bullshit". We should not have allowed ourself to fall into that. It made the "PO" look like another insurance company instead of what it is. Taking profit out of health care and setting a new paradigm.

So, no, I am not optimistic. Not at all.

Either private insurance companies will (rightly) claim that a public govt. plan is not "fair competition" and a shitty PO will be all there is OR private companies will not be able to compete and will die out. That would be great, but I do not see it happening.
