Can anybody tell me the religious affiliation of the accused Orlando shooter? Why hasn't that

information been a part of every early report when it was so important that everyone immediately know the accused Ft. Hood shooter was Muslim yesterday?

Can we possibly understand what someone not a part of the 'majority' goes through? I just read about the Major's car being vandalized to the the tune of $1000 because it bore a bumper sticker in Arabic! We treat 'others' like dirt and are surprised when they strike back.

"Iglesios del Dios" are Protestant churches serving mostly people with Latin American heritages. Many are store-front style churches and don't advertise a formal denomination.

Read the threads and reports coming out about this man's past, his wanting to leave the military after 9/11, his history of workplace harassment, his alleged statements from coworkers and blogs. It's not proof, but it indicates that religion may have played some role in this incident.

Of course these are not proven (or dis-proven) claims at this point.

However, that is really beside the point. The fact is that we have one of two scenarios.

Either (1):
The Fort Hood shooter made a religious reference while (or at least immediately prior to) committing the act.

or (2):
People have falsely claimed that the shooter made a religious reference.

Either way, religion is clearly shaping up to be a factor in the events at Fort Hood. It may be that the shooter was basing his actions on religious motivation or it may be that others are taking an opportunity to try to frame him as being religiously motivated. Or it could be that he had been bullied by others due to his religion, eventually pushing him to this point. In any case, religion plays a part.

In the Orlando shootings, there has been no claim of religious motivation, so the media has not been talking about his religion. I am certain that if he had run in there shouting (or people had claimed that he ran in there shouting) "God hates fags" or "Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord" or some other phrase used by Christian fanatics, they would be talking about his religious affiliation in the media.

I saw that people who are treated like dirt sometimes retaliate. And we shouldn't be shocked by that when it happens. Didn't see any approval (e.g. "deserved") provided for that kind of behavior, though. Just a plausable explanation as to why it happens, not whether it is good or not.

Columbine certainly falls under that, along with many other school shootings.

Sometimes it's not.

Sometimes it might be.

If it is or might be, it shows up in the news reports. The hypothetical black kid beaten up by white kids--hey, it might be race related. It's a sensitive issue, so it gets explored. Moreover, even after race has been excluded there are still people convinced it's a coverup. Pick any two races, religions, ethnicities, or SESs that don't enjoy good relations and the same is true.

People look for patterns. It's what we do. We're damned good at it. So good, in fact, that we see patterns in random events. It's a lot safer to think you see a lion in the grass when there is no lion than overlook a lion in the grass because, well, it might *not* be a lion. Consider it to provide an evolutionary advantage. The same works in groups: We're primates, we're tribal. We look for distinctions (where the distinctions are somehow socially relevant, not always race or religion) and if we find them we attribute importance to them. Sometimes outsized importance. But sometimes we're right--and even if we're usually wrong, being right sometimes is sufficient.

"We" in the above is not "Americans". It's "humans." We all have our tribes in which we're part of the majority. We also all run into circumstances in which we're a minority. Sometimes our minority status doesn't matter; sometimes we simply don't notice it. Been there, done that.

As for Hasan's vandal, he had recently returned from Iraq. There the tribal boundaries are very, very clear, and it can be hard to shed a boundary's salience. Moreover, he was also arrested, just in case he misses the fact that he and Hasan were, at least in the police's eyes, part of the same tribe.
