16. Rendering plants don't smell like decomposition
Rendering plants do reek, but it's nothing like the smell of a decomposing body, which makes a rendering plant seem refreshing.

12. A sausage factory smells nothing like decomposing bodies.
Nor does a slaughterhouse, for that matter. Or an old fashioned rendering factory (in the 1960's, we lived upwind from one for a couple months, so I know the smell...)
Or keeping hogs. I've lived in rural areas where the kids were all in 4H, so I know what raising pigs, chickens, turkeys, goats, llamas, horses, cows, etc smell like.

Facilities dealing with butchering or body rendering of any sort fall under community nuisance abatement laws where they have to be cleaned and inspected on a regular basis. Herbivore and omnivore animal poop has a distinctly different smell than carnivore poop.

And in my ill-spent youth, having helped drag lakes a couple times for "sinkers and floaters", I know what large mammalian decomposing bodies smell like. It's nothing like animal poop, sausage factories, rendering plants, or any activity dealing with animals or animal wastes. Only paper mills and swamps in the late fall, filled with dying vegetation and the gas they produce, smell worse than large decomposing bodies.

Now, I can see neighbors not exactly knowing what a decomposing body smells like, but the police should know better.

15. Yes, the cops should have known
because once you smell someone who has been decomposing for a while, you just never forget it.

Maybe the investigating cops were lucky and only smelled fresh corpses. The ME certainly would have known.

21. Oh, absolutely. Nobody cares if you stick to killing black women who live on the streets.
It's a sad commentary on life in these United States. These women's own families (if they still had any) probably gave up on them long ago. That's why they could disappear without anyone wondering what happened to them--or, if someone did, it was likely shrugged off with "I don't know what happened to her since she (ran away from home, got involved with drugs, started selling herself on the street, etc.)."

Most of us at least feel that if we went missing, someone would notice--our family, our friends, our employer. These women most likely had lost contact with anyone resembling that kind of figure. So they could be murdered without anyone noticing they were gone.

24. The 'Yorkshire Ripper' went free because cops didn't think a nice chap like him could do such things
Even though there was evidence in full view, he went free and only lightly questioned for a long time. Sounds like this guy 'can't be a serial killer 'cause he's black - he's just a rapist' was the thinking here.

And yes, street people and prostitutes of all colors - well, they're just whores; who cares if they get killed? Often the case until a "good" woman is a victim. It's wrong.

23. Dead critters in my kitchen
A couple of times I've had mice come in at the end of summer and die inside the walls in my kitchen.

Mice.

The smell was unbearable for about two weeks until they rotted and dried up. We've even had them die in the hot air heating system.

I can't even imagine having to smell ten or eleven dead humans, which must have been the equivalent of 300 dead mice (or more).

damn. I could ralph just thinking about it. :puke:
