OK so this guy is one of the fringers. However this idea has amusing elements to it. Many of those who oppose gay marriage won't like anyone poking their nose into their lives and telling them what they can or cannot do. Especially those hypocrites who are constantly dumpimg their wives for the newer, younger model.

2010 California Marriage Protection Act

“A few weeks back we introduced you to John Marcotte, a writer who runs the site BadMouth.net, and is collecting signatures to get the "California Protection of Marriage Act" on the ballot. If passed this initiative would make divorce illegal in California.

John doesn't really want to ban divorce--he's making a point about gay rights, specifically that if you want to argue that gay marriage is bad for traditional marriage, you'll have to agree divorce is worse for it. His group at RescueMarriage.Org recently made the following PSA which argues that "Children of single-parent homes are repulsive and unlovable," and that "Hell is eternal, just like your marriage is supposed to be."...video at link.

A lot of people get hurt when some people are deemed not as equal as others, it ripples outward. Until the religious right is stopped from setting the agenda in this country, many people will get hurt. And you are correct in that it's not right but until all who were created equal are treated as such, nothing about any of this will ever be right.

3. If fundies want to "protect marriage" they need to make it irreversible

By all means, let them protect ALL marriages, good marriages, bad marriages, abusive marraiges, financially strapped marraiges, adulterous marriages, to include their OWN marriages regardless of which category it might fall into. If it's indeed a "sacred" institution, then by God they must live with the consequences of the "til death do we part" vow, and never ever set foot in a (gasp) civil court to undo any stupid life choices.

Let's say you say "covenant" and your fiancee says "traditional". Does this mean one of you is less committed to the relationship than the other?

What's the Difference?

Here's the punchline : One might figure that Louisiana, being in the heart of the Bible Belt, would have couples rushing headlong for this option to demonstrate their commitment to each other along with their higher power! However, the facts tell a different story - barely over 1% of couples deciding to get hitched, actually go for the Covenant option!
