| The Republicanization of the series reboot of V... |
 |
Edited on Wed Nov-04-09 04:11 AM by cynatnite
If you watched the original series it was the RW rich types who got into bed with the aliens and the world wound up living under fascism. It was the lefties who resisted and who were the good guys. Hell, they even protected a girl's right to choose when she got knocked up by a lizard.
On the new series we've got beautiful aliens offering free universal health care in order to ingratiate themselves to a populace they wish to feed upon. The stage is set for the religious and righteous to resist and fight. Chances are they'll be painted as narrow minded xenophobes by the universal health care-loving alien buddies that will also happen to be Dems.
In other words, it's the 20 percenters, the birthers, and what's left of the republican party that's has to stand up for the bible, the flag, and for real 'merkins. etc.
Or it could be that I've been watching and reading too much politics.

| 2. I guess that is the old 'to serve man' plot |
 |
but it's kinda stale to me as more than a single episode of the Twilight Zone. I guess I could sorta see an alien species that was either so advanced or so ruthless that it had no qualms about eating humans, but why would that be their first choice? Why would humans be considered tastier than cows, pigs, deer, chickens or turkeys? Or corn? Or apples?
I suppose that could be a method of warfare, solving two problems. First, you get something to eat and second you kill a competitor for food.
It would be more interesting if they were sort of benevolent, but still destructive. First, because they would be competition and would have the ability to take what they wanted. Second, because their superiority would be demoralizing. They might be pushing their alien ways over our primitive and warlike lifestyle and also their alien religion (or lack of religion?) against our own seemingly primitive religions.

| 3. I Remember Loving the Old Series |
 |
I remember loving the old mini - series as a kid and wanted to like the new one.
I will admit when the part about providing "Universal Health Care" to the people of earth came on....and the not to subtle implication it was a means of control, I turned to my partner and said...."Well THAT wasn't political at all." The tying of terrorists plots to alien control has it all set up to be an indictment of government and the control of the population.

Reminded me why I don't watch network television anymore. The original V was not very good and held little interest to me when I was a kid. I thought this new show would show more thought because first contact has so much potential. Well guess again.
I really don't mind the politics in either direction so long as the story is good (people should be smart enough to figure out the politics for themselves).
I wonder if the series will even make it back on the air after the Olympics hiatus. I can't believe it got good reviews. Boy network television is really a wasteland.

nothing more than a political statement. All those young people being brainwashed into thinking they were just here to help earth and give us Universal Health Care. I wouldn't be surprised if the head lizard is black and they have a flag that resembles a swastika.

| 7. The fellow that wrote the pilot |
 |
...also wrote the Sci-Fi network series The 4400. As I recall, that series had a somewhat similar plotline about the "taken" attempting to control the world.
The writer for this new version of "V" is Canadian and while I don't know his particular political leanings I'm really not concerned that this show will have any great affect on the American Public. "V has been trouble-plagued since it began production. That writer I mentioned just yesterday (Scott Peters) stepped down as show runner and a third show runner has taken his place. As well, production on the series came to a halt this summer after only 4 episodes were filmed and so far, there's no broadcast dates scheduled after ABC airs the first four episodes.

I saw a "V"ery cliche science fiction show.
I think people are seeing things because the meme is out there about it.
Obama didn't invent "change". The Who Moved My Cheese lady did... and that lady (Change is Good!) with the angry bees in her zip lock bag.

Kenneth Johnson (Both series' creator) isn't making a political statement, he's merely using the time honored technique of using current cultural memes in order to make his work of fiction seem relevant and to connect to the viewer.
Of course, he's going to make references things that one will see in any newspaper or TV news program today. He also made references to the Internet, the You-Tube and Facebook culture, teen angst, the international terrorism threat, the economic downturn, and the protest phenomena.
Political statements are usually forced affairs. Take a look at that anti-Michael Moore parody that was done by the Zuckers. THAT was propaganda. That had an agenda. I really could not see a political agenda on this current version of V.
He clearly tossed a lot of stuff in there to make the show seem plausible for his expensive undertaking.
This is a case where political junkies just need to put down the pipe and take a little tine to put their brains in park.
Not everything is meant to be political.

I am a sci-fi nut and could only stand about 2 minutes of that shit.
The original sucked and the remake sucks even more.
I am glad they are trying to make the RWers look good in this (assuming you are correct). The series will fail miserably and this will be part of it.

But when the evil alien V wanted to give everybody "universal health care" I sat up and took notice. Remember Steve McPherson, president of ABC, is the guy who brought us Path to 9/11.
