11. your anger is just! I am Gay by birth, and a Christian by choice. I think we continue this path
we're on, instead. I don't need fed to the lions in a blanket attack on all Christians any more than Gays need to be killed just because some think God says we're going to hell.

We are getting stronger in our efforts, and there are people changing every single day who are learning that the phrase, "to each their own", should be taken to heart. I was reading some of the comments from actual reporter interviews up in Maine, and was heartened to see strong conservatives say who are they to say who can and can't love another.

We will prevail! It isn't today - but it will happen.

I wish I could tell all the people who voted No on Issue 1 thank you, as it was close. And I wish I could tell all who voted Yes, that I'll not judge their love even though they get all ramped up to go vote against mine at a ballot box!

12. I don't think your religion is any more worthy of respect than any other of the many ridiculous---
---things that humans have believed throughout our history.

I might respect those that call themselves Christian for other reasons but certainly not because of their religion.

At the end of the day, liberal Christians are nothing more than enablers for their non-liberal brethren. They normalize magical thinking in place of rationality. You might be harmless but your beliefs are certainly not.

did so long before I realized I was Gay. Being Christian is a choice, I got told that's wrong on a newspaper website yesterday, and that it's a 'religion' and not the same as a choosing to be Gay. Regardless, we have people all over the damn place getting on each other, that guy saying I'm disrespecting his religious views, and you saying I'm enabling closed-minded Christians which is the last thing I do - I walk out of churches that spew hatred, and you don't know me or the thousands of things I've done for Gay youth, Gay rights, disputing views with my Christian friends, etc. So, have your opinion that Christianity is false - but do not ever pretend to tell me who I am, and I won't tell you who you are enabling.

20. I know more than 1 homophobic atheist. So immediately, that's not even worth bringing up.
Edited on Wed Nov-04-09 02:48 AM by Divine Discontent
There are even more homophobic quasi-religious types than there are true followers of specific religions. The haters of GLBT people I come across purport to be "Christian", but don't know the first thing what the Sermon on the Mount is - they are the majority of homophobes in what I've seen in working with Gay youth. Most of the nation says they're "Christian" but most of them know jack about their faith, as Bill Maher has talked about.

I respect your belief in no resurrection of Christ. The same respect should be given, but too many cannot do the same. It's a shame really. But, you show what you're capable of accepting, and I have nothing to do with that - all I can tell you is that we disagree and that's a-ok, nothing wrong there. But, to label people in large blanket attacks or think we're all the same, or that by being one of the millions of Gay and Christian people out there, we somehow 'enable' others to attack and hurt our rights because of the faith we believe in? Well, that's closed-minded. I do nothing that enables hateful individuals with my faith in Jesus Christ. Sorry, it's a rather pointless debate. So, we'll just agree to disagree, my fellow progressive!

23. I didn't say there weren't any homophobic atheists, but I would bet any amount of money that they...
...are a much smaller percentage of the atheist population than homophobic Christians are compared to all other Christians. Even in a somewhat civilized country like the United States.

http://forum.richarddawkins.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=61...

This is an online poll in one of the most popular atheist forums on the web. The sample size is not very big I know but the numbers are still impressive. Keep in mind that this is a forum with free speech, people don't get banned for saying homophobic crap like they do here. Everyone is allowed to voice their point of view without fear of reprisal.

By the way, you've just committed a logical fallacy, the "No True Scotsman" fallacy to be specific. The only thing that objectively defines a "Christian" is whether they identify as one. And guess what? Most Christians in the world are homophobes, you are a minority.

I know that I seem cruel; I don't have anything against you personally even if I think your beliefs are harmful to us all. I don't care about the fact that you feel you need the crutch of religion. Judeo-Christian beliefs have probably contributed more to the persecution of homosexuals than any other single thing in the history of the human race. That's something that is not easily brushed aside.

Do you understand what I meant when I said that your beliefs, as innocuous as they might seem to you, normalize magical thinking? Not only is religion, by its very nature, a source of objective morality but it is also rigid and hostile in the face of change. Most Christians, unlike scientists, think that they don't have to look further since all the answers have already been provided.

The bible says that homosexuality is an abomination, whether it is a mistranslation or not, whether it is taken out of context or not it is there. When you brainwash people from cradle to grave, tell then that this book is the ultimate source of truth and morality they are not being taught to think rationally, they are being taught to accept authority instead of actually figuring things out for themselves.

And your beliefs, even if you might not think the bible is the unerring, divine word of YAHWEH, normalizes this sort of approach.

You believe in prayer don't you? That Jesus was the son of YAHWEH? Even if there is not ONE single shred of evidence to prove any of this you still believe it. Faith is the ultimate enemy of reason, it asks for people to believe things without question and without evidence.

Fundamentalist Christians would be marginalized for being fucking insane in most of the civilized world (and they are, to some extent in most of Europe) but it is people like you that make the process towards secularization so painful. The belief that homosexuality is somehow evil is fully based on magical thinking, there's not one single logical argument against being gay.

I know this won't make one ounce of difference. You will read it and your mind will shut down so you don't actually have to process anything of what I've written then reply with some inane red herring. I've talked religion with more Christians than I've got pubes, it's always the same thing.

But maybe not.

There are agnostics and atheists who don't like gays. I know a couple.

27. But it's Christian churches who fund the hatred
Edited on Wed Nov-04-09 06:53 AM by theHandpuppet
I'm sure there are both agnostics and atheists who don't support equal rights, but neither have organized to target GLBT rights. The ballot measures (to repeal) in California and Maine were funded in large measure with funds from the Mormon and Catholic churches. Right now the representative for the Washington, D.C. Archdiocese is actively battling against equal rights in the District, along with local pastors of major Christian denominations (mostly A.M.E. and Baptist).

Wherever you find organized efforts and tons of money being poured into efforts to persecute the GLBT community, you will find the organization and money provided by Christian churches. Those are the faces behind the protest signs of hatred, those are the hands placing dollars in the collection plates of persecution. So you'll have to pardon those of us who are just sick and tired of this shit.

29. this is what the OP hopefully wanted to say. I understand their anger, I share it, but you
rightfully point out it's the organized churches coming out with their millions to take away equal rights - that's the reason to be angry. And I'm all for that.

Lashing out at people that are also on your side because they have something in common with those that are not is fucking idiotic.

The theocrats are the issue not any religious belief, I hate theocrats at least as much as you do and work for the same issues. Christians get to be punching bags regardless of where we stand but I doubt shitting all over other groups of faith would be accepted much less cheered.

Could you imagine the uproar (rightfully so) if someone put an OP on here that pointed out a well known news story from the past involving the murder of someone, and said it needs to happen again, just because someone of similar attributes as the murdered person, did something horrible? I know many are just upset, and lashing out the easiest way they can, and they clearly don't mean it literally (I'd hope not!), but, the OP should realize that those 47% of voters who came out in favor of Gay Rights were more than likely two-thirds+ Christian?

43. I assume you also want to kill the followers of Islam
since they are more anti-gay than any Christians I know.

http://www.missionislam.com/knowledge/homosexuality.htm

According to a pamphlet produced by Al-Fatiha, there is a consensus among Islamic scholars that all humans are naturally heterosexual. Homosexuality is seen by scholars to be a sinful and perverted deviation from the norm. All Islamic schools of thought and jurisprudence consider gay acts to be unlawful. They differ in terms of penalty:

The Hanafite school (currently seen mainly in South and Eastern Asia) teaches that no physical punishment is warranted.

The Hanabalites, (widely followed in the Arab world) teach that severe punishment is warranted.

The Sha'fi school of thought (also seen in the Arab world) requires a minimum of 4 adult male witnesses before a person can be found guilty of a homosexual act. Al-Fatiha estimates that 4,000 homosexuals have been executed in Iran since their revolution in 1979. 10 public executions of homosexuals have been performed in Afghanistan by the Taliban army.

Remember when those homosexuals were executed in Vatican City? Me neither.

48. When the Followers of Islam Donate Money En Masse to Repeal Same-Sex Marriage
...I will hold them responsible for what happens to gay people in this country.

The attrocities committed by muslims against gays in other countries does not lessen the outrage of christian organizations denying me my rights in America.

"He does it worse!" is a third grade argument.

for gains of their own hatred and agenda?
If so, then yes, they are worthy.
If not, they should leave the church in solidarity against what they church has become. A political tool.
ANYONE who has anything to do with any organized religion that is using their church as a tool of hate are pharisees.

While the outrage being experienced and expressed today is totally warranted, calling for the torture and death of all Christians really does not help. As can be seen by the responses in this thread, this is inflammatory and offensive to many.
