blame maxico for illegal immigratio problems
Edited on Tue Nov-03-09 10:19 PM by francolettieri
They are always talking about what to do about Illegal immigration and how to combat it, plus the negative economic impact it has on this country. the way I look at it, why doesn't the United
states start putting pressure on mexico to get their act together and start creating more opportunities for their citizens so this country dosn't get stuck with the consequences that arrise of mexico's innability to funcion and provide opportunity for its own citizens giveing them no other choice but to sneak throught the border.

the first way to do this is to defeat the drug cartells by leglazing drugs www.leap.cc Maybe the united states can send aid so they can build fresh water wells and make other improvements so make Mexico infistructure to make it a self reliant country It would nice if we could fix mexico so the amount of citizens wanting to migrate into our county will be equal the amount of our citizens wanting to migrate to mexico. Mexico can be fixed. they have a great climate, tourism, farmland, natural resources. Whats it gonna take for the pieces of the puzzle to fall togeter

8. 57% of illegal immigrants are Mexicans. 24% are "other Latin American".
This is from Wiki, but it's in line with the other reports I found on the net:

The Illegal immigrant population of the United States is estimated to be about 11 million people, down from a historic peak of 12.5 million people in 2007.<2> According to a Pew Hispanic Center report, in 2005 57% of illegal immigrants were from Mexico, 24% were from other Latin American countries, primarily from Central America,<3> 9% were from Asia, 6% were from Europe and Canada, and 4% were from the rest of the world.<3>

17. I thought the OP was talking about our situation.
Apparently he thinks it would work out if Americans would want to move to Mexico in numbers equal to the Mexicans who want to move here. The only thing that would make that happen, would be if Mexico changes their land ownership laws, and can bring in a third party guarantor that Americans who invest in Mexico won't be robbed by citizens or the Mexican government, as well as a dirt cheap cost of living so that even the less adventuresome US retirees would consider moving there.

None of which would work, because the only reason the illegal Mexican labor works in the US is because they are ineligible for government programs and welfare. It keeps the cheap, powerless, and expendable.

21. I agree, the thought of Americans flocking to Mexico is farce considering
the amount of illegals in the us is not an entire picture of all the people looking for work coming from Mexico and Latin America. We can't even supply jobs for our own population, Mexico can't do it, central America can't do it. No amount of legislation is going to make that happen.
Also, we can't expect from Mexico what we can't control here when it comes to being ripped off by people and corporations.

23. While it is possible to be ripped off in the US as you have noted, the differences are significant.
In Mexico, the laws which make foreigners own desirable property by proxy make Americans rightfully nervous, especially when they have read articles about Americans having their property taken from them. In contrast, a paid for property in the US is about as secure as it can get, even if it's taken by eminent domain, you have to be paid market value. In addition, Americans would rightfully fear the instability of the Mexican government and its ability to protect middle class and upper class people from the less than bashful class war which simmers and occasionally pops in Mexico. I'll grant you that I have not written a book on the subject, but the body of work on You Tube from the "Stolen Continent" and "indigenous peoples" types are emotional and express a desire for a violent wave of change both in Mexico and in the United States. None of which adds up to white Crown Victorias heading south in droves to their retirement villages in coastal Mexico.

29. The claim being disputed was that "most illegals are from all over Latin America, not just Mexico"
Now, English being what it is, that sentence could be read as if it said, "Most illegals are from Latin America, not just Mexico." presumably meaning that the problem stems from a broader base than the culture, government, and economy of a single country inspiring its people to break the laws of the neighboring country. But in practical reading, the statement reads, "Most illegals aren't from Mexico, they are from all over Latin America." and that isn't true. Most of the illegal aliens in the US are from Mexico, 57% are from Mexico with illegals from all other countries combined to be the minority.

5. I do sort of agree with you, however, no one has been
able to get the five oligarchic families of Mexico, who are in power, to do the right thing. Since our oligarchies aren't much better and part of the problem, doing all those things that seem so sensible are a big problem to accomplish. I do know that most Mexicans would rather stay in Mexico if they could make a good living and have a quality of life there.

Capital, increasingly, does not recognize national boundaries.

Labor doesn't stand a chance if it continues to impose illusionary limitations upon itself.

Bringing Latin Americans into unions could revitalize and strengthen them immensely.

La mayoría inmigrante ilegal son Canadiense, not Mexicano. (I admit my Espanol is rusty, but I figured it was worth a shot as the OP is clearly only passingly-familiar with the English language. If Spanish isn't his primary language, I can also try Yiddish, Arabic, Farsi, German and igpay atinlay.)

It is true though, there are 1.2 Canadians illegally in the US for every Mexican. Of course since they're overwhelmingly white and the vast majority speak English better than most Americans, the Minuteman bigots don't care.

Edit: typo

30. Do you have a cite for that?
Everything that I've read has Latin Americans as over half the undocumenteds, with Mexicans making up the majority. That would mean that Mexicans account for 25% of our 12-25 million undocumented immigrants--perhaps 5,000,000 people. There are only about 33,000,000 Canadians, so 6,000,000 Canadians would be 1.2 times.

That is a huge percentage of the Canadian population, yet I have never heard of any news story here or in Canada bemoaning either the fact that Canadians are leaving for the U.S. in great numbers or complaining that Canadians are here in great numbers.

I've lived in lots of places in my 54 years, and I'm good at picking out Canadian accents. I hear them very rarely--generally in northern cities and in Florida.

I'm not inclined to believe your assertion until you post a good cite.

43. If you can't find a cite supporting what you say,
I'll go with the majority of the studies which do not even come close to supporting your point.

I'm sure that there are Canadians working under the table here, but Canada's economy is good and Canadians get health care with citizenship or residence. The educational system there is excellent, and college is reasonably priced. My former roommate got out of their version of MIT with only $12,000 in low-interest loans.

There's very little reason for Canadians to come here and considerable reason for Mexicans and many Latin Americans, particularly central Americans and folks from northern South America. People all over the world are surprisingly rational.

I suggest that you reconsider your position in light of the lack of empirical support.

But I won't automatically accept "the majority of studies" when the method is "the best we can do", but still flawed.

27. Immigration increased exponentially after the passage of NAFTA.
When we began pumping heavily subsidized commodities into Latin American companies, they could no longer compete in their own homeland. They could no longer earn their living from their own land as they had for so very long. With no recourse, many of the men and the young have had to come north to look for employment.

Ask yourself, if you could earn your living in your home, would you risk all they do to emigrate to a country that doesn't want you except for cheap labor?

32. I'd be more than happy to tear up NAFTA.
It is bad for Mexico and it is bad for the U.S.

34. I think many Mexicans would much prefer to make a decent living at home, no question.
I would definitely support greatly increased aid to Mexico and a rethinking of our disgusting agro subsidies which hurt small farmers in Mexico so much in return for enhanced border security and workplace enforcement.

31. You cannot let capital pass "freely" across border and not expect labor to follow.
I agree the cartels need to be neutered by the decriminalization of drugs.

But immigration will continue to grow until the trade agreements incorporate Economics 101.

35. This is the most important point.
This applies to many other issues, as well: e.g. H1B visas.

39. The first paragraph appears in many letters to the editor from Minutemen, usually with the
phrase, "disgraceful country" (Mexico) in them.

41. What's weird is that you actually edited this without bothering to fix "Maxico" and "Immigratio"--

if you can't even bother to get the headline right, I'm not going to bother with the rest of your post.

42. No blame whatsoever for the US corporations that actively recruit Mexicans?
No blame, whatsoever, for the big businesses that broke the meatpacking unions in Omaha and other cities so that Americans could no longer afford to work in meatpacking? Have your meat prices gotten cheaper since the unions were busted in the Midwest? No, they haven't. But labor costs have gone down for the big packers.

What it's gonna take for the pieces of the puzzle to fall together is for other countries to accept their share of the blame for exploiting immigrant workers.
