WellPoint Unicare writing to tell me they will cease offering health insurance in Illinois.

"Competitive pressures have made it increasingly difficult for us to maintain our high standards for excellent customer service and affordable quality benefits."

OK, so a question. Is this an attempt to manipulate me to oppose health care finance reform legislation? Or is this their admission that they view reform as inevitable and that the big bucks they have been scamming from me are now going to be impossible to extract?

1. The latter
Rats leaving a sinking ship will have to wait for the insurance salesmen and their stuffed pockets in front of them.

2. They figured out you might get sick.
To retain profitability, they are cutting out with the premiums you've paid in hand before the shit hits the fan. Meanwhile, I hope you can find a replacement provider. Or that Obamacare passes with a public option. I suppose we are all in the same boat...just wondering when we will get the notice of termination, hoping its after we turn 65.

3. Unicare figures one person is going to get sick
so they shut down shop in two states? Isn't that overreacting a tad?

4. It's Very Interesting to Me
to hear the Repubs talking about competition. What is keeping insurance companies from selling in every state now? Probably the fact that some states have stricter regulations and the insurance companies don't want to be regulated like that. They don't even want to serve a few states at this time. It is ridiculous that selling over state lines is a talking point.

6. I bet they try that to get people to
write congress to sink the health care bill. Wonder what in the devil they would do if there was another option available...go belly up.

8. BCBS made an agreement with UniCare...

....to offer all of their insureds in Texas and Illinois similar guaranteed issue (no underwriting/no pre-existing conditions) coverage at similar rates so they wouldn't find themselves out in the cold when UniCare pulls out of the market.

7. When a state entertains or enacts
new regulations on insurance companies they will leave the state to show what a bad idea the regulation is.
They will show how much they are actually in control.
That may or not be the case with your state.
