With only a few exceptions in the Democratic caucus, the single payer members have been good soldiers in accepting the compromise of a public option, and even compromises beyond that. Most people in the single payer crowd, myself included, understand that their goal is only likely to be achieved gradually and incrementally. Even Kucinich seems to have realized this now, as his amendment helps to build more blocks toward a single payer infrastructure.
It was wrong for the leadership to strip Kucinich's amendment from the bill. Its supporters deserve a vote. If it passes, then great! Although I am inclined to think that the vote will fail, but at least then the leadership will have more standing to be able to ask the single payer members to suck it up and vote for the final bill---with an understanding that the single payer folks will continue to fight to improve it later.
