10. Wow
I travel around the U.S. for my job and the Redwood Forest is on the top of my list of favorites (most breathtaking) I am always dismayed that I can't replicate what I see when I'm there through my pictures

The redwoods need to be saved.

That being said, I lived there and I worked for PL, so I have a different perspective.

That and Sillet is an ass. :D

Did you know he moved to Forestry?

On edit-- did you recognize Jim Spickler in the video? He was at HSU the same time you were, if I recall correctly. He's probably the best big tree climber on Earth. Awesome skilz.

14. That might be Montgomery woods.
I used to own a ranch adjacent to it. Rode my bike through those woods every day. I have photos that even they don't have, but aren't digital so I can't share them. It's like a cathedral in those woods. Montgomery is one of only a few places where logging never took place.

...and some were from Jed Smith SP. I recognize all the locations. Montgomery flat is different, the way it sits down in that swamp with the ridges all around. It's a special place, for sure.

I lived in Hydesville for a few years. I spent a lot of time in the woods in Humboldt county. Mostly around Shively. Until Fish and Game finally kicked me off Pacific lumber land. It works that way. But I had a blast. Mostly bike riding.

By the way, Montgomery woods is on Orr Springs road in Ukiah. It may not be the same place as the one you mentioned. I'm not sure. I love all of those woods. There is something so majestic about the big trees.

18. That was very interesting
to watch. It took many months for the photographers to get the right pictures at Redwood National and State Parks. People who aren't professional photographers think it is easy to get pictures like those, but a lot of work goes into it.

23. yep-- I live in Blue Lake, CA...
...about five miles from Arcata, where my HSU office is. I've been here since 1997, and I STILL can't believe my good fortune. The places where that footage were shot are 40-60 minutes away, not counting the hike in (Atlas Grove is accessible by car and a short walk to the bases of specific trees-- if you've been to Prairie Creek, you might know it as the Cal-Barrel grove). I can't tell whether the tree they shot the montage of was Atlas itself-- I ought to know, but the the angle is different from ground perspective, and completely different from the crown view when you're climbing. I'll have to ask Sillett-- it's kind of embarrassing to not recognize trees that I've climbed numerous times, LOL.

But yes, I'm totally blessed to live and work here in the redwood forest.

Not a particularly good shot, but here's what a day at the office looked like when I was still climbing. That's me in the blue helmet, collecting insects from a hanging flight-intercept trap. The tree is Atlas, possibly the same one as the Nat Geo montage. The trap was at about 50 m above ground in this shot. Like I said up-thread, I'm too old to do that now!

I could stay on the ground and catch what you drop.

It must have incredible though..back then..seeing what you saw from up there..and getting paid for it!!!

I think that is an incredible shot, BTW. Sure gives one the right idea about how big those trees are.

It's an amazing tree-- there are five separate vertical "main" trunks branching from the crotch above my head in the pic, with a meter of organic soil in the crotch itself. The crotch is at 50 m, and total height is around 90 m if I recall correctly. The wood volume is immense. Just immense.

Here's a pic of the upper crown-- all the vertical stems you see are part of Atlas!
