Can we please start banning people for repeated ableist behavior?
Seriously.

There have been enough threads about why calling politically opponents "mentally ill", or use of the word "retarded" and its derivatives is offensive.

Some people, however, just don't listen.

Since we ban people for being sexist, racist, or homophobic (I should hope so), can we ban people for being ableist assholes as well?

90. Look again. A person who plays the cello is a cellist.
A person who is able is what -- an ablist?

The emphasis needs to be with the verb, literally the state or action directed at others and not whether someone is an 'able-bodied' person or a 'musical' person.

The word itself is extremely problematic. I described it elsewhere as 'yucky,' which while it lack clinical authority is just about right.

And leave DU alone. I've noticed you going off about this most of the week. While it is a worthy subject of discussion, to advocate banning people who call others insane is, well. . .

There are thousands of posters here, and calling somebody "crazy" or "insane" is a pretty common idiom, not just in the US but throughout the world. While I get your point, you're fighting an uphill battle, one that you won't win. There are lots of crazy situations and crazy people, and humans being human are going to call them for what they are. If you can't deal with this, then I suggest that you go become a hermit and seal yourself off from the world, because otherwise you are going to be perpetually offended.

Oh, and before you come blasting back here, let me tell you that at one point in my life I was indeed clinically insane, looney tunes, crazy, etc. etc. The idioms have never bothered me, and frankly I would be willing to bet that they don't bother many, if not most people with mental illness.

Dude, I've barely been posing in GD at all most of the week. All I can find is one post from yesterday that was about one sentence long. And I wasn't posting on DU much this week before a day or two ago. So, really, I have no idea what you're talking about.

And I wasn't talking about people who simply call people insane. I was more referring to direct, repeated claims of mental illness.

She is a typical Republican, elected by rank and file Republicans. There is no more scathing term for any human being than Republican. 64. Wrong. Most republican LEADERS know they are full of shit.
They're just opportunistic about manipulating easily frightened voters. Bachman is a True Believer. She's not just saying these things to rile up the base and increase donations and votes, she really thinks the government is out to get her through the census and vaccines. The difference between monomaniacal opportunism and paranoid true believerism is what sets Bachman apart from the pack.

But there I went and used a couple of clinical terms and probably offended you.

I do not believe it is necessary or desirable to cast everyone who is rude, insensitive, or disparaging of a definable group as some kind of -ist. Existing terms like rude, disparaging, etc. are ususally sufficient IMO.

But I do feel that people who dislike large contiguous rocks such as Stone Mountain, Mount Rushmore, or Ayers' Rock should all be castigated as amalgamists.

47. I think we should ban people who have cute puppies.
There are actually people on this site who post photographs of their cute puppies for all to see.

It is patently insensitive to post pictures of cute puppies when the poster plainly knows that not everyone has a cute puppy, and that seeing pictures of cute puppies will make them feel bad in their not having a cute puppy.

76. In this thread we see DU at its best as posters congratulate themselves for being clever.
Here we find supposed Liberals and Progressives who would never think of using sexist, racist, or homophobic labels or wouldn't call someone a "retard" but have no problem using mental illness as a pejorative in spite of the fact that those who are truly mentally ill will suffer discrimination all of their lives because of their disease. Then they try and justify their behavior by claiming it is no worse than saying someone has freckles.

Do we really want to be like those who hate and are so intellectually lazy that they resort to using hurtful labels? So often they use these words out of fear. Is that why throwing out being mentally ill or other like things used so casually here, because so many here are actually afraid of what those words represent?

It's cheap and easy and lazy to name-call. It takes more creativity to craft a sentence that actually expresses something intelligent. The haters seem to be unable to do that, but I am sure we can here at DU.

92. Is a person who is a scientist discriminatory toward people who do not
use or believe in the scientific method?

If he or she were discriminatory toward people who do not use or believe in the scientific method, would he or she then be a "scientific asshole" or a "scientist asshole" ?

The problem appears to be in the adjective by syntax.

A herpetologist who discriminates against people who don't know anything about reptiles is what -- a herpetologist asshole? Is she or he a herpetological asshole? How about an antiherpetologicaphobal asshole?

And what about herpetologists who are really good folks? Is there something about their being herpetologists that would also make them assholes? If not, there is nothing about someone who is able-bodied which makes her or him an asshole either.

For further analysis of assholes as a general subject, a proctologist should probably be consulted. Be forewarned, however, not to consult a proctologist asshole. Or a procotological asshole. They might behave in a discriminatory manner against patients who do not have assholes.

This has to be worked out immediately. Let's contact Lou Dobbs and see what his input is.

133. Michele Bachmann's repeated behaviors is quite representative of delusional disorder
Ann Coulter's inability to maintain relationships (among many other things) indicates borderline personality disorder.

The fact that many Republicans with these various conditions are relatively high functioning sometimes confuses folks who think that mental "illness" equates with more profound psychotic behavior.

Virginia Foxx for example can carry on a conversation- yet earnestly says things that indicate a considerable (and abnormal) degree of paranoia.

I don't think we should ban people for ableist behavior, because they are ableists out of ignorance. They have not seen the hurt look on a person's face when someone uses the word "retard" or mocks the special Olympics. They don't understand not all people with DD are super confident and able to shrug off such insults and mockery, yet they do understand this with most other demographics, such as Black people or women. I am not sure how to teach this, but education is the key here. If we ban them, they won't understand why, they may even consider themselves to be the victim.

they wouldn't have a problem with Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck. Truth is some people say mean, nasty, and rude things. If what Glenn Beck says if offensive then calling politicians mentall ill or retarded is also offensive. Of course that doesn't take away the freedom to say it. Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh are as free to say what they want as the people on this board are free to say what they want. I just find it hypocritical that some want to critisize Glenn Beck and other conservatives for what they say and then excuse their own offensive behavior.
