I GOT THE SWINE FLU VACCINE!!!
I am extremely excited about this because I suffer from a severe breathing disorder that only leaves me at 25% normal breathing capacity on a good day.

I have been very afraid of getting the swine flu. It has been rampant in our area (and 2 of my children may have already had it).

All my kids were vaccinated at the same time. Two of them have asthma, so we are all VERY glad to get the shot.

PHEW!!!

11. You're pretty hung up on that notion.
However, studies cast serious doubt on the efficacy of standard flu vaccine. Infection and death rates appear to be the same in both vaccinated and unvaccinated populations. There is no data on swine flu vaccine yet, but maybe this will be a flu virus that doesn't mutate much.

3. Congrats! My daughter is getting it today.
Because of the shortage, there's probably not going to be enough around for my wife and I to get it as well.

That's why this year, I'm not going to be trying to talk morons into getting vaccinated. This year, the bottleneck is supply, not compliance.

5. Good news..
just be aware that the protection from this vaccine is likely to be limited to one degree or another, so be sure to take normal precautions against the flu.

My household got over h1n1 last week. The symptoms were very mild, fortunately.

8. Yes, we have implemented a regimen consisting of
a nasal bath with saline solution and gargling with lysterine two times a day (at teeth-brushing-time). Bacteria and viruses tend to hang out in the nasal and throat passage for 24-48 hours before moving further into the body, so if you can head them off at the pass, that can work wonders. Of course hand and face washing is good too, but almost impossible to keep on top of with small kids.

43. I got a one-page sheet with recommendations that included sinus saline bath...
..swabbing the nostrils with sesame oil (keeps them moist - dry, cracked sinuses are more prone to introduction of germs/virus), gargling with warm salt water or listerine, etc.

I will scan and post it here later. It was from my voice coach. I intend to make copies and send to Mom and family members but can also scan and post on DU.

Prevention is probably best.

It wasn't the H1N1. They won't give her that - yet. I think they're giving it to children and health care workers first, then others later. She's in CA. I guess this goes state by state.

Thanks re: Mom - she's home and slowly improving. It didn't help that the power was out during this and she couldn't even use her nebulizer. They require electricity. Sheesh.

EDIT: Mom said the regular flu shot this year does contain a live virus - but maybe she misunderstood.

with "death panels" and clinics in schools that provide abortions. Pfft.

19. A close friend who is a pediatrician in town.
We are in the process of switching to his office for family care anyway, so he went ahead and vaccinated us. His kids and my kids are good friends so they all got the shot together in my living room. We were literally the first in town to receive it.

It does not surprise me that he got the vaccine so soon. His area of expertise is vaccinations and he has published a medical book about them. He goes to conferences and such all the time.

category to get it first. I'm happy for you that this was made available to you so early.

22. Yes, my husband is not in any high risk group, so he did not get it yet.
He's okay with that. He's just glad that the rest of us got it.

Our friend (and pediatrician) is only giving them to those in the high-risk groups for now. And rightly so.

23. Do you feel any urges to bleat uncontrollably? Arms extending forward stiffly?
I read on DU there's some kind of zombie sheep side effect. It's in a study done by somebody, you find yer own link. :D

We're getting the jab as soon as we can. Our local clinic does a "drive-by" thing which is great... you fill out paperwork at the first station and get jabbed at the second. Cool thing about it: very little exposure to other folks during that period before antibodies get made.

27. Our area is only giving it to 2-yr-olds.
The vaccine won't be in for the next at-risk groups until next months and even then, children 6 and under and pregnant women will be their next priority. As a severe asthmatic, I'm TERRIFIED of getting ANY flu as I am currently without insurance (again!). I'm currently avoiding riding the bus, which I normally do every day. Flu for me could be fatal. I'm SO glad you were able to get the vaccine because I know how vital it is for people with breathing problems.

The entire Central Valley seems to be on the bottom of the priority list. I'll just be extra cautious, take extra supplements and have echenecia (sp?) close at hand.

36. We have implemented the folloing regimen after 2 of our kids got sick
and I think it helps.

We rinse the nasal passages with saline solution and gargle with lysterine.

Viruses and bacteria hang out in the nasal and throat passages for 24-48 hours so you really want to head them off at the pass. This was recommended to us by a doctor and it has worked well. At least it will help you to feel somewhat empowered.

Good luck!

42. I heard that children are particularly sucseptible - because their immune system
isn't built up yet. Don't know if that's true - but in CA (according to Mom) they're giving it to children and HC workers first, apparently.

52. My son is only 5 month old and can't get the vaccination yet. Here is some info:
http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/childrentreatment.htm

Infants and Children and the Novel H1N1 Virus

Little is currently known about how this novel influenza A (H1N1) virus circulating in people may affect children. However, seasonal influenza and past pandemics, it is known that children, especially those younger than 5 years of age and those who have high risk medical conditions are at increased risk of influenza-related complications. Among children less than 5 years, the risk for severe complications from seasonal influenza is highest among children less than 2 years old.

Illnesses caused by influenza virus infection are difficult to distinguish from illnesses caused by other respiratory pathogens based on symptoms alone. Young children are less likely to have typical influenza symptoms (e.g., fever and cough) and infants may present to medical care with fever and lethargy, and may not have cough or other respiratory symptoms or signs.

Everyone with underlying medical conditions should get the vaccine. I'm not one of those people who are deathly afraid of the swine flu vaccine or vaccines in general, but I do have a question. Does anyone know if parents of autistic children are getting their children the swine flu vaccine? My son had all of his vaccinations when he was a baby. At three he was diagnosed with autism. I don't believe the vaccines had anything to do with him having autism. He had trouble hitting his developmental milestones from the beginning. But the stories I hear of children developing normally and then boom get autism right after receiving a vaccine has me a little skiddish. I know there was one case in which a court did find in favor of a family in which a vaccine made their nine year old's autism worse.
