This month's contest theme is Wabi-Sabi.

WHAT IS WABI-SABI?

The Japanese view of life embraced a simple aesthetic
that grew stronger as inessentials were eliminated
and trimmed away.

Pared down to its barest essence, wabi-sabi is the art of finding beauty in imperfection and profundity in nature, of accepting the natural cycle of growth, decay, and death. It's simple, slow, and uncluttered-and it reveres authenticity above all. Wabi-sabi is flea markets, not warehouse stores; aged wood, not Pergo; rice paper, not glass. It celebrates cracks and crevices and all the other marks that time, weather, and loving use leave behind. It reminds us that we are all but transient beings on this planet-that our bodies as well as the material world around us are in the process of returning to the dust from which we came. Through wabi-sabi, we learn to embrace liver spots, rust, and frayed edges, and the march of time they represent.

I wanted to participate but we have had so much rain that I wasn't able to get out and take the pictures that I wanted.

9. I have to say this was the most difficult contest for me....

I love all the photo contests and all the photos entered but I found this one, with it's very impressive theme, to be the most difficult to actually choose among all the photos as I LOVED them all equally. I LOVED the theme as well.

48. "Frosting: best exemplifies the spirit of "wabi-sabi".

The leaves, having just changed colors, now frost covered really showcased how beauty is such a short-lived thing. It passes so quickly and must be enjoyed. Beauty just before death, perfect.

i often find that artists overlook titles, which at times i understand. but i find it's a wonderful opportunity to add additional framing to the work, just as much as the camera itself does. by framing with additional ideas from the title you get a richer experience of what the artist is trying to convey -- even if it sacrifices ambiguity for the audience to play with.

edit: i am not familiar with the term "wabi sabi," however it sounds almost identical to the very well known Japanese aesthetic of "mono no aware:" bittersweet appreciation of the transience of life. can't find this term if a few of my dictionaries either. hmm, interesting. new words are always nice to come across...
