Jobless flock to sign up for the military
The anemic job market, an increase in sign-on bonuses and new attitudes towards military service are proving to be a winning combination for recruiting.

The Department of Defense said it met or exceeded recruitment goals for all branches of the armed services for fiscal year 2009, which ended Sept. 30, for the first time since 1973, when the draft ended and U.S. forces withdrew from Vietnam.

2. We can conceal the jobless numbers a little longer...
...through invented wars that keep those inconvenient people busy and out of sight.

For our next trick, folks, we'll move everyone in Iraq into Afghanistan, and vice-versa. If we haven't created real jobs by then, well, we can do it over again.

3. And so starts the next crop of right wing assholes
Nothing like military indoctrination to instill respect for authority (no matter how idiotic it is), mistrust of foreigners, violence as a solution to conflict, and the absence of skeptical inquiry. Anyone who comes out of the military with a caring, liberal attitude does so in spite of them, not because of them. They have the ability to take pliable minds and turn them into Tim McVeighs. He wasn't unique and time will only tell what the total burden is to the militaristic American culture.

Perhaps America will turn out to be a modern day Sparta: capable of great military victories, but in the end, not able to influence anything.

6. tens years of navy turned my apolitical ass into a left wing loony.
we don't all fit your stereotype, fortunately. most of the wingnuts I encountered seemed to be junior officers.
