The Power Of Negative Thinking
By: Eli Friday October 16, 2009 6:01 pm

It really is quite remarkable how much stupid Republicans can pack into just a few short paragraphs. Check out today’s NYT story about the GOP’s brilliant political strategy of all-obstruction, all the time:

Congressional Republicans… are certain that the politics are on their side. Dismissing Democrats’ attacks on them as “the party of no,” they point to polls and other signs indicating that high unemployment and deficits have created vast unease with Mr. Obama’s agenda as the 2010 midterm elections approach.

“We’re the party of know: k-n-o-w,” said Representative Pete Sessions of Texas, chairman of House Republicans’ campaign committee.

“We know a lot about the Democrats’ plans, and we think it’s a bad way to go,” Mr. Sessions added. “Theirs is about taxing and spending and destroying jobs.”

I agree that there’s a lot of worry and outright fear about unemployment, but the rest is bullshit. Hardly anyone worried about the deficit when Dubya was piling wars on top of tax cuts like the Devil’s Jenga, so I don’t believe that the average voter is suddenly more concerned about America’s credit cards than their own.

Of those who are, I suspect that most simply don’t want their tax dollars to go to those people. Speaking of which, I wonder how many newly-minted deficit hawks are in favor of letting the Bush tax cuts expire next year?

But I digress. What’s truly noteworthy is the Republicans’ unshakable confidence that there is nothing unemployed (or uninsured) Americans want to see more than government inaction. Yeah, I’m sure that if I lost my job, I would totally want the government to sit on the sidelines and do nothing about it, because everything would fix itself if they just stopped their infernal do-gooder meddling. Oh, and God forbid that anyone should try to extend unemployment insurance, because that’d be the last thing I’d need. That kind of logic may make sense to the GOP’s Obama-is-deliberately-trying-to-destroy-America base, but not to anyone else.

Yes, it’s entirely possible, even likely, that Obama and the Democrats will lose seats in next year’s elections, because they’re the ones in the filibuster-proof driver’s seat, and their efforts thus far have looked pretty half-assed (Obama’s blasé, tone-deaf comment about jobs being “a lagging indicator” won’t help either). But despite what the media and GOP will say, the Democratic losses won’t be because the American people think Republicans saying No is awesome, they’ll be because they think Democrats taking No for an answer is awful.

Also: “Party of know” is really, really lame.

2. Any slogan that you have to spell out...
"Yes, it's no with a 'k'!"
"Nok?"
"No, know as in 'kunnow'"
"Kunnow? Is that a word?"
"No".

3. Well, a visit to washingtonwatch.com where many
of the unemployed with totally exhausted benefts gather, may support their theory to a point. The longer the Dem majority in the Senate continue to delay passing the UI extension bill, the nore posts I see bashing -- get this -- Obama! Yes, short courses in high school freshman level civics have been posted to no effect and yes, most of them blaming Obama are "regular" posters.

Yes, there are frequent posters like me who lay the blame where it should be--primarily at the feet of Sorry Harry and his fellow repubs senator buddies Kyl and Hatch who keep pointing the finger at each other. So don't think their pitiful idea can't work because there are a lot of, shall we say, severely uninformed/unlearned people in the US who may even be registered voters.

Kyl and Hatch Block Unemployment Aid for Tens of Thousands of America’s Jobless

snip//

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has tried twice to bring the UI measure to a vote on the Senate floor. First Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.), then Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) blocked action.

7. Funny, I posted above that Kyl and Hatch are pointing fingers at Reid,
while Reid is pointing fingers at them, when all Reid has to do as Majority Leader is force the bill to the floor using rules of the Senate, since there would seem to be at least 51 votes for passage and, obstensibly, the repugs don't even have the necessary 41 votes for a filibuster.

As I said, the repubs are doing their typical obstructing thing yet, in the final analysis, Reid isn't demonstrating any kind of strong leadership to get the bill passed either. As with every bill that comes to the senate floor, he is looking for unanimous consent with the repugs. He's a piss poor leader, whether as minority or majority, and there are millions of Democrats who agree, including Democratic Representative Alan Grayson who recently obtained a 90,000 signature petition seeking the ouster of Reid.

But whatever.

Fox and Rasmussen pull some numbers out of their asses and the gullible Shittoheads buy it every time.

It must really hurt to be that pathetically stupid.
