Just unfriended a wingnut on FB
It's a guy I knew in high school. Found out that he's gay, which is cool. But then the subject turns to politics. He writes on his wall about how unfair the treatment of Rush Limbaugh was, and how it sets dangerous precedent for free speech. My basic argument was, hey this is a "free market", not every business has to hire assholes who are going to ruin their brand. His comeback was, well, if you don't hire because you don't like his speech, then maybe it's okay not to hire blacks and gays. I made the point of course that this is silly, hate speech is a choice. He then went on this tirade about George Soros and how even though he ratted out Jews during WWII (when he was 13!), he should be able to invest in the NFL. I then said, where do you draw the line? What if the investor was David Duke or Fred Phelps? He then said, comparing Rush Limbaugh to Fred Phelps is like saying homosexuals are pedophiles. I got fed up at that point, told him he stooping really low. Unfriended him immediately. Was this guy an ass or what?

2. I just joined FB
so far I have no wingnuts who have come out of the woodwork. I only posted one political rant so far, but my Flair board is 90% political.

I've only been on there a week so not too many old friends have found me (so far just one)

There are probably 20 people I should just get rid of right now.

5. I've done the same thing
And yes he sounds like an ass to me! But to others maybe not so much.

The only opinion that really matters in this case is yours, don't let it be swayed by anyone else's opinion.

6. It's a shame that people lose friends (or miss out on catching up) because of politics.
I stopped defining people by their politics about six months ago. It's nice. When you make it clear that you don't want to talk politics, you can have some good times with people you'd otherwise be missing out on.

And the great news is that the vast majority of people don't live and breathe politics 24/7. Cable TV shows, talk radio and political websites tend to focus the mind on things that aren't really important on a day-to-day basis. I stayed away from this site for a few months and it was a good break. After 30 mins, ready to do it again! I'm glad to know that less than 2% of people watch the cable bobble-heads on either side.

8. I struggle with that. Sometimes I feel like the liberal
voice needs to be heard, especially when Uncle Blowhard spouts the latest Beck talking points at the Thanksgiving Dinner. I haven't decided which way to go.

11. I did at first, but then realized, what difference does it make?
It's unlikely you're going to change someone's mind. And if that person is spouting off at Thanksgiving dinner (to use your example) let them be the blowhard who made things awkward at the table. Nothing worse than two blowhards.

this last week, and had to endure the comments. Wife forbid me from speaking up. I get your point. It's hard though.

18. With me it wasn't like that. I was just minding my business when
I get a phone message and I call the person back just to get a right-wing spiel of hatred. And it's not just that, but it was like the straw that finally broke the camel's back. I heard decades of nonsense from time to time with this person who calls herself a "democrat" and I just got tired and couldn't take it anymore.

What made it worse is, she denied all the stupid things she has said over the years telling me, "you must be mistaking me for somebody else" to which I replied, you're right, apparently you were never the person I thought you were. She was all for the war in Iraq but of course denies it now. Refused to watch Farenheit 9-11 and was always defending Bush. A frigging' democrat!

16. Here! Here!
I've been gone for a few days, logged back on this morning, and was hit immediately by people who are so cranky. I have many friends whose politics are completely unknown to me. It goes back to a post I made last week: there is more that binds us than divides us.

7. In the Free Market of Football Team ownership, Limbaugh was a bad investment..
that would have hurt the brand image of the team he wanted to join. It is all about making money, and the conflict is supposed to be on the field between the goal posts. They made a decision based entirely on free market principals.

9. Funny he should mention Soros. MLB rejected his 2005 bid to buy part of the Wash. Nationals.
They said he was "too polarizing". For real.

defense in support of free speech.

13. Does your friend realize that Rush hates him because he's gay?
Limpball and Phelps wouldn't lift a finger to help him if he needed it, because he's gay. He should just die, his life has no value. At least with Soros the door wouldn't immediately slam in his face.

Really, what is it with gay people, black people, really any minority? Don't they realize they are part of the problem with these people? And yet they support them and defend them. Sheesh.

14. Your ex-friend doesn't understand what "Free Speech" is.
The government had nothing to do with the NFL decision; in business there is no real concept of 'free speech', what you say can and will be held against you.

If I was looking for employment at a certain establishment, and had publicly disparaged many of the employees and management of said establishment, you bet your life they can hold that against me when deciding to employ me or not.

Tell your ignorant friend that speech of any kind does have consequences, for good or ill.
