Playing to their base....
How I hate that phrase. We Democrats/Liberals should not be using it. I think a political party should invite all citizens to join in forming and organizing community in every way that that needs to be done but they are not a base. Movements have a base which are in Eric Hoffer's definition "TRUE BELIEVERS". Movements and "the base" that supports them are anti-democratic and anti-community, which amounts to being against government except for themselves.
I am all for different philosophies of governance and different views on how we relate to each other but being a Democrat is not being in a movement. Once being a Republican was not being in a movement but that is not true anymore. So one of the ways to tell us apart is to see whether we have "a base" or if we inclusively invite all to participate in being a citizen. One is a movement and the other is a political party.
